Rebates

Since HP were so quick and effective in returning my rebate when I purchased my new PC, and I gave them credit for it here, I thought it was only fair to express experiences with other companies to, to assist other geeks in their decision making.

If you purchase a product from OfficeMax with a mail-in rebate offered, don't expect to get it back :( What a long-winded, fruitless task that is!

Was the rebate via OfficeMax or the manufacturer?

They generally like to pass the buck (no pun intended) back and forth.

  3. Lev

    Lev MajorGeek

Well they certainly aren't passing that buck my way!

    It was OfficeMax direct.

Out of curiousty, why can't you take it further if they refuse?

I would, regardless of the amount. I can't stand companies doing that, and it's also against the law.

Either that, or I would redeem it myself using my five finger discount coupon. :)

What would be the point of that? It would all take place behind closed doors and internal solutions. It's much more productive to make people aware that what you are told you may get in the form of a rebate is probably unlikely to happen and let the consumer decide if they still wish to spend their hard earned cash there. I've advised them that I shall not be a consumer at OfficeMax again. Considering the amount is small, they have lost far more in future purchases than ever they will save by not honoring the rebate. In addition, this way is far less effortless and stressful for me :)

    huh?

They're a big reason the federal government is planning to regulate the rebate process, to protect the consumer. They recieved something like 9,000 complaints in the last 5 years.

Not sure about your neck of the woods, but here we have Fair Trading etc. (I'm sure that you guys have that)

    "What would be the point?"

So they don't do it to others, and more importantly, you get what you are entitled to and give them the shits.

Obviously that's up to you, and I know why you posted, but I would have posted, then dragged them through a tribunal if they refused.

Fair Trading is great here. I got back $3 900 from Gateway even after they went broke.

"huh?" I was kidding, as in steal something to make up for it.

In an ideal world and having not gone through all that fuss before, maybe I would. But I have a husband, a full time job, 7 kids, 3 grandkids, one more on the way, 8 cats, 1 dog, 2 fish and a 50th birthday celebration coming up.

Family are more important that getting all steamed up over a few bucks. I've given enough e-mails that they know how I feel :)

Insomniac...you and I have very different approaches to life....let's just leave it at that. Neither is wrong..neither is right...just different :)

Have you tried to visit the local manager and found out the name of the District, then Regional Manager?

Set up a picket line of all your kids and start a revolution!

Buy the supplies at Staples though.

8 cats? My chow could finish them off in 2 settings. He loves them plain or cooked any which way. BTW on rebates..........I use rebates a lot. Have never had any prob get them. Sometimes takes up to 8 weeks but have eventually always received them (including OfficeMax). So far, so good.

Lev, I know why you didn't get your rebate.
I bought a Samsung monitor from OfficeMax with a supposed $30 direct mail in rebate to Samsung. Sent it in, 2 weeks later got a letter "Sorry, you don't qualify." from Samsung. Said F*** & Oh Well.
To date , they have sent me a $20, $50, & $30 check. Each direct from Samsung.
So my $179.00 monitor has been a great buy at $79.00.
    Samsung SyncMaster 730B. WHOOPEE!!!:) :) :)

Rebates can be a PITA that's for sure. We never even got the forms for our cell phone rebates...Chris went round and round with them I don't know how many times over it. The only reason we got the phones we did was b/c of the rebates. A year later and this is still unresolved.

Can't complain (yet) about rebates from Samsung and CompUSA. The ones for my Syncmaster 930B came through as promised. Recently sent in another one to CompUSA for my vid card so we shall see on that one. Also just sent in one to Western Digital and Circuit City for my new HD, hopefully those will come through ok.

    Just an update....

It's been a month since I communicated with OfficeMax in basic Anglo Saxon...never expected to hear from them again to be honest.

Got home from work yesterday and there was the rebate check sat waiting for me. So, basic Anglo Saxon does work ;)

I think you owe OfficeMax an apology. :)

  22. Lev

    Lev MajorGeek

Why? If I hadn't stood my ground and laid out my case they would never have sent me the rebate. I'm not apologizing for being firm to get what I am entitled to :) I have no problem apologizing to anyone when I am in the wrong...Lord knows I've had to do it enough over the years ;)

I thought you said you didn't care about it, and that you didn't have time because of your family and pets?

I still think you owe them an apology. :)

  24. Lev

    Lev MajorGeek

That's correct..and after saying that I have done nothing more about it. The check simply turned up weeks later of it's own accord, without further intervention from me. Read what I typed :)

I totally disagree with you. If anything, they owe me an apology for their inability to carry out what they said they were going to do within the time frame given, without me having to intervene in a very simple administrative process.

See, you owe them an apology.

You prematurely attacked them for no reason, when the cheque was on it's way. :p

  27. Lev

    Lev MajorGeek

But it wasn't - that is my point! I have it in writing that they had no intention of issuing one. And anyway...you need to learn how to spell check :p Dang Aussies :p

    Heh...pun wasn't intended, honestly! Spell "check" - spellcheck ;)

You don't have it in writing, that's just a cop out.

Be an adult and just apologise.

It's no big deal. They were doing their job, and you didn't give them a chance.

You made a mistake and lost your temper, it happens. :)

I'm just trying to understand Lev, but you're making it difficult.

You said you were too busy to chase it up, then the cheque showed up.

Quote "I have done nothing more about it. The check simply turned up weeks later of it's own accord, without further intervention from me"

If that's the case, you owe them a big apology, although I wouldn't blame them if they didn't accept it. :)

  31. Lev

    Lev MajorGeek

OK..I took it further to a point. Then others advised here that I should keep on taking it further...contact different people...write letters etc etc. It was at that point I said I don't have time. I took it to where I was prepared to. They said they were not going to honour the rebate, so I naturally assumed with that statement I wouldn't get it, and let the matter drop.

    THEN it turns up :)

I hope that satisfies your curiosity Insomniac, because I am done here. I'm too busy to chase this thread up as well :)

  32. Insomniac

I know it turned up, that's why you should apologise to them.

If you are saying you took it further, then you owe me an apology because I suggested that originally and you attacked me for doing so.

As you can see, you owe OfficeMax and myself an apology.

The question isn't whether you should apologise, it's whether we accept it or not. :)

I just read the bit where you say I am worked up, and you know something....you're wrong.

I'm not worked up a bit. I'm just a patient person that can play you at your own game, answer your questions, even if you are repetitively boring :p

I don't need to justify my actions to anyone. I was just suprised that, since your ancestral roots are British, you were so slow at understanding this whole mail-in rebate process.

Are we done yet? I want my afternoon nap ;)

What makes you think my ancestral roots are British, and that the British have cornered the market on intelligence? :)

Anyway, it's obvious that you are not a big enough person to admit when you are wrong, and to apologise to someone who originally offered you help, let alone poor OfficeMax.

This is what we get for doing you a favour. :)
