I've been living with this problem for quite a while & think it's about time to ask someone for help. Whenever I press "Reboot" on my Windows program, the system shuts down, but when it starts up again I get the "ScanDisk" program running with the message "Windows was not shut down properly, etc. etc." I wait for the scandisk to finish running then Windows opens back up again. I have to go through this problem whenever I download something & have to reboot or if I change anything & have to reboot. If I press "Shut down", everything seems OK. I downloaded a "patch" from Windows Update about 3 months ago that supposedly was going to correct this problem. Any ideas?:(

Isn't Windows 98 now not receiving patches because it's old?

It's a general rule if you don't know you didn't customize it :p

I'm still receiving them. As a matter of fact, I was just notified today re: a root certificate problem & downloaded it.

Alright I thought they stopped patches too as they aren't backward comitable with the Win 2k or later (XP, 2003) API...

This is the "patch" I installed that I thought would fix the problem.

    Microsoft Knowledge Base #0260067
This update resolves a shutdown issue in Windows 98, and is discussed in Microsoft Knowledge Base (KB) Article Q260067. An affected computer can stop responding if it has a significant number of mapped network drives on your computer. The larger the number of drives that are mapped, the more likely the problem may occur. Download now to prevent your computer from failing to respond during shutdown.

For more information about this update, please read Microsoft Knowledge Base (KB) Article Q260067. (This site is in English.)

Well it looks like the race was won by exeter, but in vain. I checked my download history, & I already downloaded this patch in January of '03. Sorry to say this didn't correct the problem. Any ideas what else it could be? Thanks a lot for being patient.

Diz, you're probably kidding, but just in case you're not ...

You musta missed the funny race at the end of page one and the top of page 2 of this thread:

    1. exeter posted a link;
    2. robo posted the same link
    3. halo posted the same link, then
    4. robo edited his post (2) to say that he had lost to ex but had beaten halo; and
    5. halo edited his post when he saw what had happened; and then
    6. exeter, the winner of the race, posted a LOL message; and finally
    7. robo posted again, with a new link.

THAT's what was funny, and I suggested that they could do a dance together with that kind of coordination.

    OK?

(Edit: Nah, forget it! You had to be there when it was happening.)
