I just bought a new Toshiba laptop, it did not come pre-loaded with Outllook or Outlook Express. But I can buy it as part of a 199.99 package if I would like. I do not like. Can anyone recommend to me a good free email program from this site I can use? Thanks for any help, John.

    Greetings, valvestem.

I've used/installed Pegasus Mail many times, with good results. Free, and the client often works when others fail.

Thanks for that answer Caliban. I will give it a try.

As an afterthought: make sure you set up at least one Gmail account - a web-based email client is a modern necessity.

You might also want to take a look at Mozilla Thunderbird, from the same ppl that provide Firefox. Very capable POP/IMAP client with address book and calendar. I use it in conjunction with gmail in IMAP mode. It's excellent.

Another option is the Opera web browser, which has a built-in email client that supports POP3 and IMAP.

I will keep Opera in mind, I have been using Chrome for a quite a while now, and am accustomed to it pretty well.

I already have a web based email account set up through my broadband provider, but Thanks for the tip.

To Caliban: I have downloaded Pegasus and set it up with minor difficulty, but it is working fine now. I would like a notification sound to chime when I get new mail like Outlook Express, any ideas? Also, I would like to check for new mail folder view about every 5 minutes, that sound right? It was default checked at every 3 seconds.

My recommendation is also with Mozilla Thunderbird.

I have been using for a while now and really like the program.

Yes, Thunderbird is pretty much exactly like OE from what I remember of OE. There was no learning curve when making the switch several years ago, it pretty much just worked.

One benefit of Thunderbird is backing up your mail if you need to change computers or reinstall your Operating System is very easy with Mozbackup. You can use Mozbackup to export everything including settings to a file and just move it over to the new computer and use Mozbackup to reinstall everything just as it was. You won't use it often but it is a good feature of using the program.

I use http://www.gmx.com, though they have recently "improved" the program by adding advertisements rolleyes (not too frequent) in return for unlimited storage of emails.

You can use it to automatically pick up your other email addresses and route them all to gmx.com which is convenient for some people.

    Try this:

Select Tools | Options...from the menu.
Go to the User Interface | Reporting/Logging category.
Make sure Play a New Mail alert sound is checked.
    Click the Select Sound button.
Choose the desired .wav file (you'll likely have to browse to a file).
    Click Open.
Use the Test button to verify Pegasus Mail plays the right sound.
    Click OK.

    Sounds good to me.

As an aside: Pegasus is good, Thunderbird is good, Windows Mail is good. Why don't you try several clients, find the one that suits you the best - I can't think of a reason why you can't have multiple clients temporarily running on a machine for testing purposes.

    Good luck!

Well, bad news, maybe or not related. Less than an hour of downloading Pegasus, and setting it up. I got a spam email from one of my other accounts, (I have three email addresses) to Pegasus. Now I am thinking that in order for Pegasus to download my email from my provider, it had to have my username and password, from there it must have somehow accessed something somewhere to send an email with a malware attachment link to me, and a couple of other email addresses I recognize, but have not communicated with them for months. I am still trying to figure this one out. Meanwhile, I have un-installed Pegasus, and will use web-based mail for a while. Pegasus did work good while I had it, but I can't take a chance.

Well, these are quite popular among the masses:

Mozilla Thunderbird, Zimbra, IncrediMail and Windows Live Mail

I think either Thunderbird or Windows Live Mail would be good choices for you. I have been using Windows Live Mail (2009 version) as my primary email client with Windows 7. But, I've taken a look at the portable version of Thunderbird and I liked it. The portable version runs off a flash drive. So, you can take it out for a test drive without installing it in Windows and you can use the portable version on any computer since it's on a flash drive.

Follow up one year later. I have been using Pegasus since my inquiries about a year ago now. It works great, and does what I need. Thank you to all those folks who made suggestions.
