    Hello
What disc do I ask for to make a disc to recover a friends Preario?
It says it has dvd rw. Is this a dvd or cd burner?
She has some cd-rw's but I do n't know if these would work.
    Thank you

I have always heard "dvd/cd-rw" to be a DVD reader, and CD burner. If you are burning a disk, use CDs for this drive. Personally, I would not use CD-RWs for this. Use a disk that cannot be overwritten.

Would that be cd-r or cd+r?

    Hi Peter

What model Compaq Presario is your friends PC?

But a DVD RW, is a DVD and CD reader and also will Burn CD/DVD R and RW disks (R = read only and RW = Read and Write)

CD RWs will work but you may need a few of them 5+ (depending on installed software and OS), when as DVD RWs you may only need 2 or 3. I tend to use DVDRW disks always for backups, but if this is a once only deal as many OEM pcs are then DVDR or CDR disks are the way to go, most DVDRW drives will do both DVD- and DVD+ disks. Normal CD disks are just one format, its only DVD that have + or -

when talking about cd's there is no difference between the (- and +). but to answer your question use cd-r.

    Hello
She just bought a ten pack of dvd-r.
I think I can only use a disk that can be written to once.
Can these work or should i get cd-r as suggested and how do you know it can be written to once??
    Thank you.

cd-r means it can be written once
cd-wr means it can be written more than once

I would use cd-r for restore disks, but Ive never tried dvds. So it might work im not sure.

    Hi Peter

The DVD-R s will be fine, DVD is better to save to as it will asve much more data than CD

Thhe trouble we are having is knowing if she has a dvd burner or read only for dvd's.
    "My Computer" says DVD RW.
The front of the pc says DVD/CD burner so it may be able to burn both or the first is a read only and thsecond a burner.

The drive will have the information shown on the front panel.
A reader just has DVD or DVD ROM on the front. A burner has DVD and aside of it RW on the front.

    Hello all
This is only to convey to the forum the results of my initial post, and for thse who have new pcs that did not come with an o.s. recovery disc.
I did create recovery discs for my friend and a neighbor and both took about 90 minutes.
I determined that the bays had dvd burners so obtained dvd-r discs. You must use discs that cannot be over written. After locating the "Creation of recovery disc" on the pc, either by looking at All Programs or performing a 'search', you insert the dvd before starting the program. When the program appears it will let you kow if you have the right disc or not and how many it will take. When you click 'next' it is a straight forward process of following prompts until all three have been written to.
Thanx for all the advice and I hope this helps those w/o discs.
