I have read that you have to format a drive t least XX amount of times before the data is actually erased. I was wondering if there was a way to get data off a drive that has been formatted once using available software like linux or something.

If anyone has any info on this I would apprecaite it.

what kind of format did you do? a quick format deletes the file allocation table. a standard or low level format resets every sector to 0 or 1.
i dont know what kind of options for formats are available in linux.
