Recovering Lost Digital Photos?

My brother went ahead and formatted my hard drive. He did not save anything.Now I lost all of my digital photos that I had saved.Is there any way to get them back? Would there be a free program to use or would I have to purchase it? Thanks for your help

md2lgyk I can't follow the rules

I've used a free program called PC Inspector Smart Recovery to retrieve photos from a corrupted digital camera card. I think it (or another program from the same source) can be used on hard drives.
