I have had my laptop crash on me and have attempted to use the recovery DVDs that I burned after receiving the computer two years ago. The recovery process zips along until I try DVD 2 and 3 and then it comes up with five unreadable files (INP) The rest of the process completes but upon restart the hal.dll file is corrupted. Well, I had the bright idea to delete the recovery partition after burning the DVD set, so there is no using the second partition to perform the recovery. Now the system is unable to boot or run in safe mode and I do not want to reformat the drive at this point. I also tried rebuilding the bootcfg file and in the process deleted the boot.ini file and have had no success in fixing that issue either.
This is an AMD pavilion laptop running XP home with Phoenix Bios and I have formatted the D: partition with NTFS using an xp pro CD i have for my desktop. Tried to perform a Linux install on the d: partition and is comes up with BIOS error 80 and proceeds to give a series of write errors. I already unplugged the battery near the network adapter to reset the BIOS is this what caused the lockup on BIOS?
    Any help would most appreciated!:puke
