    Hello,

I am not very computer savy, and i had an issue yesterday after updating my drivers where my desktop picture was over the top of all icons including the start bar, so i was unable to do anything, i tried to do what i thought was system restore by pressing F10 in the start up i was hoping to set my computer back to the previous day but it's done a set back to factory settings :cry

I have lost all my pictures of my kids, all my work, everything, even though i still have the icons for everything. I phoned mircrosoft as i am usually running Microsoft Windows XP Media centre service pack 3, although now it says service pack 2, they tell me they don't support XP anymore and that there is nothing i can do apart from taking it to a shop to see if they can recover my things.

I want to recover it back to monday evening, so i have everything back again, is this possible and if so how?

No. What you did was a factory restore. Your files and everything should have been wiped.

Let me explain the best I can in the hopes it makes sense. When you restored everything on your drive was overwritten by the new files and returning you to new. The hard drive is like a dinner plate. Imagine that you were using 1\3 of that plate and you restored everything that still needed 1\3 of the plate. Depending on where the recovery put the new files, the other 2\3 of the plate might be recoverable depending on where the new files were put; back over the old 1\3 or on the 2\3 that had nothing on it.

In my experience you can often recover 1\2 or less of what was deleted so I wish you luck. Try:

And don't install anything else until you can run this or you might lessen your chance of recovering more.

    Hi thankyou for your reply,

I have got everything back, i was reading some stuff up on the internet and luckerly my computer created what was called a new profile, all the old stuff i found was in C:/Documents and Settings\HP_Aminstrator, i put my hard drive into another pc and copied everyting over into the new profile named C:/Documents and Settings\HP_Aminstrator_your-(then there is some numbers which i believe is my serial code) . I do have to reinstall all my cd games but i have all the save files in the old profile so i can just copy those into the folders required, thank goodness i have my pictures back.

Thanks again for your help i have put the instructions down on what i did incase this happens to anyone else.
