    Hello
I tried Recuva and ticked a random file. I then recovered it to a flash drive.
    This is good so far.
Question, because I deleted the file from the flash drive, does that mean it is missing in my pc or did the recovered file recover like an imaged file where it it still resides in the pc although it was recovered and deleted.
    Thank you

if you recover the file 'to' the flash drive, it is now in usable for and recoverable form... ie: on the HDD and on the flash drive...

    is this what you mean?

    >> Not sure... I did the above and wanted to know if I have harmed my pc.
I guess if I used recuva, it must have been a deleted file I wanted deleted anyway so no harm done. It was a test so the file was deleted on purpose. Therefore, when recovered then deleted, it would be logical that it is not a file I need.
I hope this explains my rather vague post.
I wanted to test recuva, that is what led to this.
    I think am ok,
    Thank you

    Hi Peter

If a test file that you created then deleted, then used Recuva to recover it, they you are fine as this was just that a test file.

Although from your original post, is the above, so did you create a new file and then delete it and use Recuva to recover it, or did you use Recuva and it found a deleted file for recovery and you choose a random file from the list?

In either way you are I woudl feel fine and not caused any issues with your PC, for the reason of a purposefully created file and deleted/revovered to test it was a test file, if you randonly using Recuva found a previously deleted file, they you are ok still as you must have deleted that found file originally.

Deleted files are not actually deleted fully, all that happens is that the data block on the HDD/Flash drive is marked by the system as free, however you can still recover the file, UNLESS as the data block on the HDD/Flash is marked as free, the space it occupies will be used if new files need that space will be saved too that location and in this case the data will likely not be recoverable as its been overwritten by new data.

Glad you jumped in and kudos on your IQ.
I ran recuva and when it was done I selected a file to recover. I recovered it to a flash drive. So the test was good.
I am assuming that recuva looked for deleted files.
If that is the case, the file that was originally deleted, as part of maitemance, was not needed. I therefore actually recovered a deleted file.
Now if recuva scans for other files, like one necessary to the operation of my pc, then I may have removed a necessary one.
I should have asked what recuva scans for before I ran it.

    Hi Peter
Yes indeed it was just a deleted file as Recuva does scan just for deleted files.

No you are fine as mentioned its only scanning for deleted files so does not list current files that will not be tagged as free space/deleted.

majority of the time applications like this will give you a path to where it found the file, so if in doubt just double check if it is a needed one, but the times I have used Recuva on many PCs its not caused any issues, as its a recovery tool and not a PC maintanence type one.
