System has been working fine in terms of speed, but I get redirected from a google search result every once in a while.

I've also attempted other solutions before coming here to MajorGeeks. These solutions also involved running MBAM. I've attached the log for the first scan I ran, which actually found a harmful file. I scanned with MBAM two times after that, including once for the readme here at MajorGeeks, but they found nothing.

    Thanks for your help!

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Go to TDSSKiller and Download TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop
    • Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    • Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bold command into Run box and hit Enter.
    "%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -v
    • Follow the instructions to type in "delete" when it asks you what to do when if finds something.
    • When done, a log file should be created on your C: drive named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

Okay that removed the source of your redirects. You missed some steps in the READ & RUN ME. First you have multiple antivirus programs installed. Since AVG7.5 is way out of date/discontinued, uninstall it immediately.

Then uninstall all of the below Sun Java programs as requested
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_18
    Java 2 SDK, SE v1.4.2_18
    Java(TM) SE Development Kit 6 Update 11

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.ask.com/?o=14597&l=dis
    O2 - BHO: Ask.com Toolbar BHO - {D4027C7F-154A-4066-A1AD-4243D8127440} - C:\Program Files\Ask.com\GenericAskToolbar.dll (file missing)
    O3 - Toolbar: Ask.com Toolbar - {D4027C7F-154A-4066-A1AD-4243D8127440} - C:\Program Files\Ask.com\GenericAskToolbar.dll (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below log:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Alright, I've removed the java programs and fixed the ask-related problems. Attached are the MGlogs.

    However, two questions:
    1. What's the difference between Java 6 Update 18, Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_18, and Java 2 SDK, SE v1.4.2_18? I'm asking because I occasionally code in Java, but I have no idea what these different program entries are for. Would I be able to compile java programs with just Java 6 Update 18?
    2. My windows security center keeps bugging me about not finding any anti-virus software, even though I have avast. Is this not anti-virus, or is windows just being annoying here? Can I shut it up somehow?

In any case, thanks for the help.

You would have to ask in the Software Forum or at Sun's website to get this info, however 1.4 versions are extremely ( a few years ) out of date and as severe security risks. If you are coding for applications requiring these very outdate versions of Java then your applications are not secure. You need to get up to date a stay current.

Avast is a full antivirus program and should be recognized. You may have to try uninstalling Avast, then reboot ( don't skip the reboot ) then download, install, and update definitions for the current version of Avast. Get it here: Avast! Home Edition

This problem was most likely cause due to you having mutliple antivirus programs installed at the same time. It is one on many reasons why you should never doing this. Sometime the result is a broken Window Security Center and it may not be easy to fix if at all. Although the below may sometimes help:

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
