i wanted to reformat my computer cause its been awhile, and everything went smoothly except i dont have audio now.

its xp home edition. and i found out i dont have audio cause i'd open up winamp and try to play some music, and it'd say "bad direct sound driver. please install proper drivers or select another device in config. error code: 88780078"

i dont get it? i went into my device manager, and all my drivers are up to date and supposedly installed..but still no sound!?

    Hi

So in Device Manager you have no yellow ! marks by any device?

What maybe missing is a driver that came out later on in the life of XP in the UAA HD Audio driver thats now a pre-requisite to have before installing the actual audio driver, so try the below as you have SP2

Install the Chipset driver from HERE and reboot.
Install the UAA HD Audio driver from HERE
Install the Audio driver from HERE
    Reboot and test

To fix WinAmp try this HERE
