Regarding errors with Restoration.exe

I have used Restoration.exe for quite some time with no problems.

I have however recently lost entire disk data when using this product through a USB hard drive connection as well as a slave hard drive.

The erase completely feature appears to erase hard drive device data such that the drive is no longer recognized by the system. All data is lost and the drive is no longer usable.

Using XP Pro with 1.5 gig of ram.

    Any help?

    Regards,
    Dan

Can you give a link to the program you are using? The Restoration.exe that I am thinking of has no erase function available. It only reads data and copies it to a new location.

Anytime you completely erase a drive (as in overwrite once or up to 35 times with ones or zeros) it ceases to be formatted so of course windows will not recognize it because it is not formatted.
    You have two options:
boot a linux live CD and use a tool such as diskdrake or gparted to format the drive to FAT32 or NTFS so windows can "see" it
connect it as a slave or by USB, click on admin tools in CP and use the disk manager and format it from there.

    Thanks for your response.

The program has been available on Majorgeeks for quite some time.
The following link will download the file as a zip file.
The < Delete Completely > option is at the top left corner under <OTHERS >
This feature works fine on the c drive and only effects the free space.
On a slave drive or usb drive the entire drive is lost.

    Thanks for your reply.
The < Delete Completely > option is only for erased free space on any drive.
The feature works fine on the C drive. Only the erased sectors are written over as is the desired function.

The problems lie on a slave drive or a usb drive.
This function when used on these drives somehow loses the entire drive.

I have sent the author an email but as yet no reply.
Do you know a way to re-install my hard drive without loosing all data with a format?

No. Everything was lost when you erased the drive so there is no more data to lose.

Before I do anything, I always image the drive in case something goes horribly wrong. (I've had this happen several times). I then restore the image to the drive.

    Note what it says
You erased everything so restoration can not work on this drive.

Please understand that I did not erase the disk data. The program restoration.exe does not wipe the disk. It does have a feature that will over write any free disk space so that no restore can be done for erased files.
This is the problem that I am having.

The restoration program has a feature that will over write free space only.
The program works fine on the main C drive. I over writes the free space only and the rest of the disk is fine.
The problem is when this feature is used on a slave drive and or a usb drive.
Then the computer will lose the entire drive and it will not even list it again.

No, the problem is the difference between erasing free space on any drive and erasing the entire drive. If you were to erase your entire drive C and not just the free space, the same thing would happen.
After you completely erase any drive: slave, master, external, it needs to be formatted.
If it is a slave or external, windows will report it as a RAW drive.

I think the misunderstanding in this thread may be that the writer of Restoration has limited English skills.

The "Delete completely" function in Restoration basically means overwrite free space with gibberish to make data recovery for previously deleted files impossible. It is only supposed to act on free/unused space on the drive.

I've never used this function but my thoughts are that it may not be slave/USB related but possibly FAT32 related. Technically there is no support for this idea as it should work on any type of FAT or NTFS drive according to it's specifications.

I guess I would check Disk Management to see if the HD is recognized by XP even if it sees it as Raw. [Right-click My Computer Select Manage>Disk Management and see if the Disk is listed and if any partitions are listed.

    ***
If it is not listed or recognized by Windows at all then I hope plodr or another can give you an idea. Getting it recognized by Windows without overwriting data would be the first step of data recovery.

Thanks for your efforts to help me. I am sorry that I have not expressed the problem in such a way so that you may understand the issue in using the restoration.exe program. It has nothing to do with a desire to erase the disk.
This problem has to do with a special feature of the restoration.exe program.

    Thanks for trying.

You are right on target with your understanding of the issue. Thanks for your efforts.
By the way neither drive will display through disk management.

    Thanks again,
    Dan

Boot a live linux CD to see the drive and you can format it through linux.
Ubuntu uses gparted and Mandriva and PCLinux use Diskdrake.

Look for a Live Cd with TestDisk included.

    http://www.users.bigpond.net.au/hermanzone/p21.html

It is not easy to understand and you will want to read several guides to get a better understanding but it should be able to read your USB drive to see what files are available for recovery. I just tested it off of a bootable CD and it was able to read my USB flash stick.

So if you get a copy of a live Linux CD that includes testdisk you could do the first couple of screens including analyse and then do a "P" to list files and see if your files are still there. If they are there then you have the ability to try and rewrite the partition table. You can exit without making any changes and look around for a definitive guide for your situation.
