    Hello,
I purchased a laptop at Radio Shack and even though they stated that nothing had been registered on the pc (it was the last one and on display) I had to change the user account to my name from Radio Shack.
However, I have noticed that when I am installing software it is stating the name of the user is Radio Shack instead of my. Radio Shack told me that adding a suer account under my name and as the administrator and then deleting the Radio Shack user account would remove their name from this pc. But it still showing up when installing programs. Sometimes a program will have the user account section available to change the name but most do not.

I did find that it is located in HKEY_Local_Machine>Software>MS>WindowsNT>CurrentVersion... shows Radio Shack as the registered user.

Is it safe to change this or should I just leave well enough alone?

If I were to change it aside from making a backup of the registry first would I just right click on the "registered owner" and modify it to show my name instead?

This is running windows vista home premium.

    Thanks!

    Hi

Nope you should be fine to change that key and here are some steps to follow from my fellow MVP John Barnett http://vistasupport.mvps.org/change_registered_owner_name.htm as at times just that registry key is not enough you may need to create a new user/admin account, he has steps at the bottom of the post ( do backup any info you need from the Radio Shack account first as once you delete its gone )

If you wish you can make a backup of the existing key if anything goes wrong, just right click the key/folder and choose Export

Thanks for the help. I sort of thought that I could do that but wasn't sure and just wanted to be sure before I messed with the registry.

As for the user/admin account part - I did that a few days after getting the pc. I had called Radio Shack about that and they had stated that by creating a new user profile and making it the administrator account and then deleting the user account named Radio Shack would remove them from the pc entirely.

    Thanks for the help! :)
