Hello! I am looking for a recommendation on a registry cleaner. I was looking at PC Tools Reg Mechanic, Registry Reviver, or Registry Booster 2010 (among a few others.) I would be using this on 3 computers with Win XP, Vista, and a Win7. There are many to choose from, which have you used & recommend?

    Thanks:)

What do you expect from so-called "registry cleaners"? Computer running faster? More disk space? Removing or preventing malware? Feeling good?

Apart from the last, nothing else will happen if you run a registry cleaner. Ah, of course, Windows may stop running altogether if you delete the wrong registry keys...

And what could feel worse than a several hundred dollar door-stop?

    And welcome to Major Geeks.

Maybe stubbing your toe into a several hundred dollar door-stop in the middle of the night would feel worse. Just slightly.

I would definitely recommend Registry Mechanic - its tried and tested for years.

    Registry Booster 2010 Review

uniblue Registry Booster is scareware because they say that your registry is highly damaged -this too on fresh install of windows. Its marketing is unethical and deceitful, although it did not find fake errors on any scan, I just object to the way the scareware tactics employed to scare users to purchase. Plus Registry Booster loads on boots and starts a scan automatically. This I found actually slowed my computer down much further. In this way Registry Booster is very annoying.

They are slick in their marketing and all over websites like this one with such tactics 'Before you download, get a free scan.' What they don't tell you is that this thing will irritate you to death once installed. Plus its not the easiest application to uninstall

    Registry Reviver Review

This one is the worse of the lot. On their checkout pages, they show awards which are fake. They say they have a 5 star rating from cnet and pc world. What they don't tell you clearly, is that these are user ratings and manipulated at best. When you go to these sites theselves, you realize that users have given registry reviver a 3 star rating, not 5.

Registry Reviver produces fake errors and false scans. It inflates errors count by finding empty registry keys that Windows and its programs use. I have had to repair many PCs after they have run this rogue program. It messes up the registry. Like Registry Booster review, this program starts on boot without asking for user permission and defeats user access control, and does not gives the option to switch off this annoying application. It then tells your PC is health is low (incredibly on a fresh mirror install of Windows XP with SP3)

see http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=217876 for extended discussion on the regisry reviver rogue program

    Ccleaner

It's quite basic and does not examine the registry hives thoroughly enough. Surprizingly it damages programs like Microsoft Works and Word. So even though its free, I stay clear of this one. Glary's utilities is better - although the user interface does not do it justice
