In the opinion of experienced users and particularly MG staff, which three dedicated registry cleaners are the finest?

I've used Uniblue's Registry Booster for nearly a year, but I'm thinking of switching to something else, especially since I've read a good deal of negative commentary regarding this company.

    Thanx. :)

PS: CCleaner doesn't count. I've used it for years, and although it does well cleaning the registry, it doesn't catch some things. That said, CCleaner is a great program overall and it will always stay in my computers.

Generally we do not encourage the use of reg cleaners at all. If I was going to use ANY reg cleaner at all it would be ccleaner, but this is not software that should be run casually.

I understand. These have to be used with caution and one should know what one is doing. On the other hand, I have been saved two or three times by Registry Booster. Do you have any recommendation that could serve as a strong replacement?

No problem, Dave. Here's one example:

    http://www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/showthread.php?t=73172

I started that thread, which quickly became a sticky. Post #54 explains the solution. Before I went to FSDeveloper, I posted on MG about this problem but help wasn't forthcoming. Without the registry cleaner, I probably would have had to reformat my drive.

Now I ask again, does anyone experienced with registry cleaners have a particular favorite... or two or three?

I used to use Eusing Free Registry Cleaner 2.8 from:
    http://majorgeeks.com/Eusing_Free_Registry_Cleaner_d5827.html
I used it occasionally on XP but never noticed any difference to speed or anything else.
So when i got my new PC and laptop, both with Win7 I decided to stick with Ccleaner but only ever run the registry cleaner if I have uninstalled a large piece of software. Normally I rely on Revo to clear out the registry entries of any program I uninstall.
Sorry I cannot help any further with other cleaners.

    Hello,
From experience sooner or later you will get into trouble using registry cleaners. About the safest one around is CCleaner. But, registry cleaners are the snake oil of the industry. I deleted thousands of registry items when I uninstalled .NET ,compacted the registry, and noticed no increase in speed or boot time. The only time I would clean the registry is if I had to go to a particular key because of an issue like malware. Save yourself some heartache and avoid these registry cleaners.

As I understand it ;), Compacting the registry can save a little RAM since it occupies less space when loaded at boot time. :)

Thanx for that, guys. Normally, a registry cleaner will not speed up your computer much, if at all, in most cases. Defragmenting the registry on its own may speed reboots and starting certain programs by a few seconds, but that's about it. The point of such software, at least for me, is to help in extreme cases where no other solutions seem available or viable, or at the very least much too complex for a non-professional to handle. The link that I provided is evidence that some of these softwares can help immensely. However, I don't recommend them to the average user (which is the market that these companies aim for), but only to those that create backups (especially images) and system restore points very regularly, and who also are fairly adept with the use and inner workings of computers. Otherwise, these programs can be a risk. Sometimes, they can even be fatal.

I have tried many of them and the best one of the lot is the Auslogics Registry Cleaner!

Just make sure to not scan / clean for the advanced categories, leve the stock options and youll never break a thing.

    Auslogics Registry Cleaner is free.

I also use Auslogics Registry Defrag and the benefits are very minor, I paid $20 USD for it but I don't mind squeezing every bit of performance out of my lappeh :D

Thank you for that recommendation. The software seems very similar to what CCleaner offers regarding registry (same options), but it may be worth a try to compare them. I looked at this developer's registry defragmenter. That may be useful as well, but it's 20 bucks just for that... I'll consider it though.

Anytime bro, feel free to download the demo it works fine for 7 days

First, it prompts you to backup your registry, then you click analyze and you watch the before and after state of your entire registry as clusters, then you see how much benefit you are getting with this defrag.

Once you hit defrag, your computer is restarted and the registry is defragged before Windows logs you in.

I have noticed that the first defrag is the best as it removes all the extra free space from the registry hive and compacts it. After that, you only really would benefit if you tend to uninstall / reinstall programs a lot.

Still for $20 bucks, I didn't mind paying for it to go side by side with my PerfectDisk 12, this way I can be sure that I am gaining every bit of performance I can from my crappy 500 GB 7200 RPM HDD

    Good luck man

I got Registry Defense from a good(Computer knowledgeable) Buddy. I like it--Run it every now and again--Although I have heard alot of controversy on using it(throughout the internet). So I can't say if it does what they all say it does. But non-the-less it works for me.

Some people say the difference is neglible, I don't believe that, and if it never hurts to do it anyway.

I usually do a boot time defrag with PerfectDisk that reboots my notebook and defrags all the boot files, pagefile, and hibernation files which are usually locked by the OS. Then I do a registry defrag via reboot again and that way I know my HDD performance is top notch and all the frequently used files / programs are placed at the beginning of the disk.
