Hi, I recently bought a new stick of pc133 512mb ram only to find that it is not compatible with my chipset. I got the blue screen of death every 10 minutes or so and every time I tried to run a resource intensive program. I then replaced the new ram with my old ram that I have never had problems with. Now, I still get the blue screen of death every time I try to scan my registry or when I try to run certain programs like winamp. I have no idea what the problem could be. The error is 0x00000051. I am fairly certain that the problem has something to do with clsid.

    What operating system ?

Please write down what it says exactly on the blue-screen and post it here.

Maybe dust have entered the RAM-slot while exchaning RAM, maybe try to re-seat the RAM a few times or try another RAM-slot. Did you change any RAM timings in motherboard BIOS while running with the other RAM-module ?

I'm running Windows XP with SP2.

    Registry_Error

    blah
    blah
    blah

    *** Stop: 0x00000051 (0x00000004, 0x00000001, 0xE1354AB8, 0x00230B18)

    Beginning dump of physical memory.
    Physical memory dump complete.

I'll try moving my RAM around now.

I tried different combinations of memory slots and memory sticks and each one produced the same error. This makes me confident that the problem lies within the hard drive. I ran scandisk and it found no errors. I did not change the bios when changing memory except for what it automatically does. Although now that I think about it.. I did update my bios to a newer version while I had the faulty in. My original bios was from 2000 and the update I have now is from 2001. I did it because I thought it might make my memory compatible. Could that cause problems? Should I try reverting back to my original bios? I did a few other things too.. updating drivers for my chipset.. updating my video card driver.

One of the registry scanners I have allows you to scan different sections and the only one that causes the blue screen of death is "Search Interface Keys". Unfortunately, I don't even know what interface keys are. I know nothing about the registry

It seems 0x00000051 means there was a problem loading the registry from the HDD into RAM. Whether it is the HDD, HDD-Controller, Memory-Controller or RAM causing the problem is unknown.

The different articles about this problem advise that one reverts whatever hardware changes one have made. It could be that by starting the computer with the faulty RAM have caused your registry files to become corrupt, and afterwards they were written back to the HDD (So eventhough you have changed the RAM back, then the registry is still corrupt).

Have you tried to use a System Restore Point, which is before you inserted the new RAM module ?

Uh-oh.. I turned off system restore when I was hunting down a worm a few weeks ago and forgot to turn it back on. Looks like I'll probably be formatting soon. I guess it's not too bad though, because I'm getting a new motherboard/cpu/ram so formatting would probably be good.

read up on your mobo specifications, especially the new firmware you've flashed with. there is no gain in reverting to your old bios, that's most unlikely the problem. see if you can find a table of supported memory modules and see if your new module fits anywhere there. it might even work without it being written down as supported and the only thing happening if it won't work is tops that you'll need to reinstall the o/s. that's up to you if you wanna 'risk' it. not really a risk if you ask me.

I'd reinstall the o/s as well. while you still can access your files, back them up. then reinstall it with a fresh format. if everything goes well you'll have your 512mb of memory and a newly installed (and still fast) o/s :)

    good luck
