how difficult is reinstalling IE? windows itself?

i have done both in the past, but only as a last resort on a dying PC. right now i have a PC perfectly functioning for OFFLINE stuff/apps, but increasingly problematic for online ones. first IE started CRASHING a lot, then my DIALUP went all kerflooie, now i find i cannot get into my EMAIL at all via IE.

i've switched to firefox for the email, but that hasn't fixed the dialup problem. not sure a fresh IE would do so either, but nothing else has, so i'm willing to give it a try.

just afraid i'll muck up my perfectly-functioning OFFLINE stuff if this doesn't go smoothly. a solid PC w/o net access is (slightly) better than no PC at all.

Can you explain exactly what you mean by this, as it seems to be close to the heart of the problem.

You say you're on dialup. Are you sure your modem didn't go on the fritz?

Just to make sure there's not a problem with the modem, go into device manager by right-clicking on My Computer and selecting Properties and then click on the Hardware tab. Then click on the Device Manager button. Go down to modems and click on the plus sign to expand the device list. Right-click on the modem that's listed and select properties. In the dialog box that comes up, the General tab should read "This device is working properly" if there's no detected problems.

As far as re-installing Windows/IE, back up the offline items and any other files you want to another drive using something like EaseUS ToDo Backup. You can then wipe/format the drive and re-install Windows AND the drivers for your computer.

This is from the Conexant Support site:

"Conexant designs the chipsets for the technology, which are in turn custom-designed for every manufacturer we do business with. As such, we suggest that if you have an issue with your modem, please contact your manufacturer for information regarding drivers, installations, repairs and upgrades."

Perhaps you need to contact your computer manufacturer to get a replacement modem and drivers.

i've tried 3 sets of drivers on the conexant and 2 sets on a new zoom I just bought.

(or is it Xoom? i forget -- it's sitting at home as i am out and about on wifi atm)

    same problems all around.
