Reinstall of win2k pro on new hd crashes

Ok, I came home from long weekend, other people had been in house using older Dell 8100 . I found it crashed (nobody knows anything !) I tried to reboot and it just keeps rebooting partway through the process, so I figured that the 4yr old HD just died. I ran checkdsk from a disk repair floppy preliminary check ok but further check only made it through 75% b4 saying major errors and could not complete. No problem just go get new HD and reinstall win2k and try to recover some of the data, Right? WRONG- While attempting to install win2k from Dell/reinstall cd it gets about 3/4 through the install process and reboots ( I did have the reinstall cd format the new Maxtor 120 HD even though Maxblast 4 had already done it ). I tried this a few times b4 I found an error log says:

ERROR: D:\I386\NT5INF.CAT catalog file could not be found error code 1 fatal error incorrect function ( I found file on the disk using another comp/explorer says size 20.2kb )

ERROR: The signature for Win 2000 Pro is invalid error code 1 incorrect function

FATAL ERROR: Setup failed to install product catalogs fatal error Setup logs should contain more info

SPECS :
2001 DELL 8100 1.3Ghz 512M NEW 120G MAXTOR HD Win2k pro sp1

Yes it is NTFS file sys, I'll check those links tnx

 

Excellent articles have to see if i have an older cd drive around and I believe dell does have adaptech driver on cd also so I got things to play with many tnx let u kno if it works
