I had to just resintall windows XP i couldnt use the repair function caus ei kept on BSoDing. Is there some way i can make it that windows uses my old user account instead of the new one it created? i also have a backup of my registry before i reinstalled windows if i need to do that also.

Not sure if you can actually migrate an account with its SID, (and I won't be the one to recommend you use your old registry) but you can copy good portions of your old user profile.

When you log in as the old user, the icons on your desktop are a composite of the files in

    c:\documents and settings\username\desktop
    -and-
    c:\documents and settings\all users\desktop

Where username is the name of your old account. If you were to copy these files from the old HD to equivalent locations on the new, you would have pretty much rebuilt your desktop.

The same applies for the start menu!

    c:\documents and settings\username\start menu\programs
    -and-
    c:\documents and settings\all users\start menu\programs
