With help of some wonderful MG people, I was able to reinstall Realtek.
However, still no sound. When I go to the speaker icon and pull up "sound" it states that speakers are not plugged in. I do not use any speakers other than what is on the monitor.
I am using a HP Pavilion m9517c, 64 bit with Vista.
    My monitor is HP w2558hc.
Any words of advice or suggestions for this computer dummy?
    Thank you.

Does your monitor have a mute button ??? and is the audio jack cable connected properly?? do you have another cable to try?? can you link me to the original thread that you were given the audio driver assistance please.

    Thanks.

    iain.t:
No mute button on monitor. All cables have been checked and are connected. Don't have a back-up cable to try.
And, I have no clue how to link you to the orignal thread other than I posted that question in the "Drivers" section of MG, asking how to reinstall Realtek.
A few days ago (now), I was cleaning up my computer, got distracted by my "monkeys" (Kids) and uninstalled Realtek.
So, after some help with figuring out what I needed exactly, just learned that I have a 64bit. Sorry, getting of topic. :)
Reinstalled Realtek. I when I play something with sound, my little speaker on the bottom right is moving to he sound, but I can't hear anything.
Thank you for trying to help me.

Using Vista, you need to dig into the Audio (Sound) Manager. Right click on the Realtek Icon down by the clock. Should be a tan color, looks like a speaker. Click on "Audio Devices". Make sure all the proper devices are enabled.

Last ditch resort, use Device Manager to completely uninstall the Realtek. This would be done AFTER using the "uninstall program" menu to remove any software. Then reboot.

Windows should load up drivers upon restart, after device removal.

I may never be able to leave MG- ever!
    When I check my "sound"
    Says, "Speakers.
    Realtek High Definition Audio
    Not Plugged in"

There is a button for "Set Default" but I can't click on it.

I've uninstalled, reinstalled, tried the MS audio fix. NOTHING. :-(
As it turns out, the 10% rule that says "you have to be 10% smarter than what you are working on" applies.

Any other suggestions? House calls? Fire pit for computers and dumb computer owners. :)

This is just a thought but do you have a menu on the monitor that is accessed through a button? Is there anything there that would enable or disable the built-in speakers of the monitor?

You're plugged into the green port on the back of the tower?

Glad you got it sorted! Good Work. Can you give an explanation of exactly what you did. It could help other people with the same problem.

I followed the link you told me to. The information in the link is set up for Windows 7. So, some of the steps didn't apply to Vista 64bit. But, the pictures helped- always helps a dummy like me to have a picture. Seems that disabling the "front panel" was what I needed.
To be honest, I am not sure I can explain it. This was very tiresome to me, a non computer person.

The above is the site you recommended and it worked for me. I just followed the steps as close as I could realizing that Vista and Windows 7 were little different.

    Again, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

Thanks for the feedback! "Seems that disabling the "front panel" was what I needed" is what would be helpful for other people.
