Reinstalled Vista, Windows Update Wont Download Service Pack 1

I had concerns about my computer because a ransomware prevention program was not able to install (this was a program recommended to me on this forum). The support staff for the ransomware prevention program said that sometimes the software isn't able to install because there is ransomware already on the computer and so the ransomware prevents it from installing. So, I decided to reinstall Windows Vista using the installer that is in a small partition on the hard drive.

Once I got Windows reinstalled, I did many Windows updates. After rebooting several times, it seems like I am up to date on the updates. Even after it said that I had gotten all of the updates, I even rebooted again and searched again. But, Windows update does not find Service Pack 1 or 2.

Next thing that I was doing is trying to update IE 7 to version 9. On the Microsoft website, I tried to download a version and I downloaded some kind of installer file. I tried to run that but it seems that version required 64 bit and I had 32 bit. After that, I haven't been able to get to many websites. I get the message "Internet Explorer cannot open the internet site.... Operation Aborted.

I was able to download Firefox on another computer and bring it over to this computer.

The three links above (download SP1 & SP2) should prove helpful. Been a while since I did a Vista install but had to do SP manually last few times around. In the start menu right click computer and choose properties, it will say if it is a 64 bit Operating System, but sounds like 32 is installed from your correspondence. 32 bit OS will run on 64 bit hardware, but 64 bit OS not on 32 bit hardware.

Thank you guys for the help so far. It was very easy to follow.
I have installed service pack 1. Should I first do all of the Windows updates in Service Pack 1 (through Windows update) or I can just jump right in to Service Pack 2?

    Hi

Just jump to SP2 as it has all the rollup updates between SP1 and SP2 in it.

Was really getting this computer up and running after SP1, SP2, & IE9. I decided to install IOBit Uninstaller to help with the Bloatware. But, accidentally installed IOBit Advanced System Care 9 along with it. I uninstalled it, though, using IOBit Uninstaller. But now when I use Windows update it just endlessly searches for updates (never finds anything or comes back saying that the search is complete).
