I reinstalled XP,but Explorer 6 seems to be missing?I have Firefox over an invisible IE,all my programs are in another folder.
I have rerad this article http://www.brighthub.com/computing/windows-platform/articles/43875.aspx but cannot find the Ie.inf file?

It appears the majority of my "stuff" is on the local disc, and the reinsalled stuff that firefox seems to working off is in My documents.I have treid to move them,it wont allow me,I have also tried using a removeable memory stick, but same problem.
I also cannot do a windows update,my AVG program appears to be running, but I cannnot find.
How can I get my windows reinstalled,I can however find the Inf folder located in the Windows Installation folder
    they mention in this article.
    Help here much appreciated:confused
    Maybe I should uninstall Firefox????

so you cannot find the file "iexplore.exe" ?

    greybuffalo Staff Sergeant

    Yes,
I can find that file,I just cannot install IE6.
Im thinking Firefox should be installed in top of IE,but its the other way around right now,if that makes sense.
    Should I uninstall Firefox?

Wait I'm not understanding. iexplore.exe launches IE. It should just open the browser. Have you tried double clicking that file and what happens when you do?

    O.K that launches IE.(iexplore.exe)thanx!
My problem is all my program files, window files and documents & settings, are in the "local disc" section, including my Virus protection, and my computer does not seem to be recognising them,or using them?

You are welcome. don't forget the thanks button. :cool

O.k. they are in the local disk C: section right? If so, that's a good start.

When you say they aren't being recognized, you cannot goto Documents and Settings/documents and see your stuff? What happens? Error message?

I can see all the stuff,I just cant move the files or seem to be able to use them, where they are?
If all my program files, windows & documents & settings are all in my local disc C,where would one transfer them too in order to get them to work?
They should be working in C right?

  8. motc7

    motc7 Vice Admiral (Starfleet)

They should be working in C true. So when you click on those files, do you get an error message? Can you post a screenshot of what it is?

When I open my Windows i get all these attached files:confused

Is it possible that my Windows firewall is blocking all these things?
No it cant be,I just tried turning it off hmm,I wonder why all my programs, favourites and all are not functioning, although they are all there?

This is your windows directory. What happens when you click on the C: drive under "My Computer"? Do you see a folder called "Documents and Settings" as well as one called "Program Files"? Please confirm.

right. One of these is your windows profile, i.e. where your stuff is.open one of those folders to see. Is your Windows username Leo?

Back under C: drive, you'll see program files. That is where all your programs are located. From all these locations, can you confirm that you can view the files?

Could be a permissions issue in terms of you not being able to move them to removeable media and whatnot. Try the following.

Goto your Windows profile folder, right click and goto Properties.
Then goto the security tab. Take a screenshot of that and post it here. What you should see is that you should have an Everyone group with full rights, and you should see your username Leo with some rights there. LEt me know.

You are on the Windows Directory.

Try it from C:\Documents and Settings and post back.

Edit: Are you running XP pro?

Take a look at this article.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421

Kind of sounds like your problem to me. It's a permissions issue, and you need to take ownership of every file and folder on this machine.

you need to verify that your account is an administrator account.

Goto Start/Right click on My computer then click manage.
On the left side look under users, and see if Leo is listed in the administrators group. If not, try to add it, but if that doesn't work, you may just need to enable the Administrator account for the machine. Usually involves right clicking the Administrator username and clicking enable.

    Let me know.

Tell us how you went about reinstalling XP. Did you boot to the CD or did you try to do it directly when in windows?

  27. greybuffalo

I would suggest that you try doing it again. Re-run the repair install.

That indicates a user profile was corrupt and repaired by making a new one.

Make sure you have no error messages when you do the repair. Hope it works this time.
