I was in the process of reinstalling Windows XP on the laptop, but it overheated and shut down.

I chose to format the C:/ partition using NTFS file system (Quick), but in the middle of the process, it shut down.

When I turn it back on it says that a partition is missing, so I can only boot from the CD.

Can I choose to repair the current operating system, or did it already delete the existing system to make room for the new one?

    How can I fix this???

Before you attempt to do any installation you need to fix the overheating problem. Open the laptop and clean it out; also be sure the fan works. What brand and model is it so maybe a diagram can be found for disassembly?

As far as an installation, since it shut down in the middle of doing something, I suspect you have file corruption.

There was no corrupt file, it was just overheating.

I put the laptop in front of the fan, and I reinstalled the operating system with no problem.

Now that it's working, I might disassemble to give it a good cleaning. It's a HP Pavilion dv4000
