I've been looking at freeware that will allow me to see what the users on our lab computers are doing ....29 computers ...anyone have any suggestions?
I've looked at "Simple Desktop"(looks like a PITA to set up) and "LogmeIn" ....but would prefer to not go thru an internet connection .....

Most flavours of VNC will allow you to connect without interacting with the remote desktop.

I would recommend UltraVNC, as it is the most feature-rich, and with the smoothest interface of the variations I've tried.

I also KNOW that this one can be setup to run transparently to the remote user.

Ok, Mada....now I'm stumped ....installed on one machine (so far) ...and it wants a address in the viewer connection ...for the VNC Server ....can't find info on how to set up this on the other puters or as a server......confused. I'm putting in the remote computers domain name ...also tried just the ip addy ...says it won't connect to server?

Did you install the UltraVNC Server part on the remote machine(s)?

Alright - I'm sorry I didn't post more information. This is second nature to me now, and I guess I took it for granted.

Okay... When installing, it should give you the option to install the server component, or the viewer, or both. On remote machines, you want ONLY the server. (Otherwise, some of the more curious monkeys will figure out how to control other machines)

Also, the server should be set to startup as a service - did we do that? That's key... can't connect to a server if the server isn't running. There should be an option to do this through the installation program. We want to install as a service, start the service, and most likely configure admin properties after installation. This will allow you to specify that you do NOT want to interact with the remote desktop (Disable viewer inputs), disable tray icon, and prohibit users from closing down WinVNC. Screenshot attached.

Hmm, maybe firewall on remote machine need to allow the vnc server .exe file? (sorry, I forget the actual name of the executable)
(and the server is definitely running on remote machine?)

Did we install the server as a service?
If so, did we start the service? (check services.msc to see that VNC server service is running)

Any firewalls better than Windows default between the machines? When connecting for the first time, you may have to allow VNC on the remote machine.

Your error: Is it the same as attached?

The service is running on both machines...and yes that is the error message.

Can't get into windows firewall on the remote machine ....and this on is w2k...so no firewall.

Hehe, Mada will take care of this, I think we're ending up asking similar questions.
You might want to try running the Service Helper (in UltraVNC program menu folder).... or maybe allow loopback connections.

Damn! This is WAY tougher than any VNC install I've had.

I assume the IP you're using is pingable?

The only other hinderance I've ever encountered was security apps flagging it as a threat. I know Windows Defender was particularly bad for this. Anything of the sort coming up in your AV or AS logs??

Okay, I may have also made a bad assumption... these machines are on the same LAN, right???

I saw you post that you didn't want to do it across the internet, so I had assumed this was the case. We may need to configure port forwarding if you're connecting through a NAT device.......???

Domain ....thru a server ....pings to all and what's odd was that if you look for computers(in the program) in the lan....all I get is the server....no local machines.
Well crap ....can't ping either of the remotes I tried it on ....save it all till Monday.

For Monday: Just wondering if you are able to view remotely through browser ( http://(remote ip):5800 ).

Also, how did you install UltraVNC? Did you install it remotely or locally?
There is a small configuration settings problem when installing/running the UltraVNC server service via Remote Desktop.

You may have to stop the service, then go to Programs>Ultravnc and start the server. The UltraVNC eyeball icon should appear in the system tray. Then you can properly modify the default settings (Programs>Ultravnc>Ultravnc Server>Show Default Settings), apply settings, close eyeball, and restart service.

Just a follow up .....all is working just fine....the ping issue was resolved by turning off the windows firewall (we have a system firewall) ....and then installing the server on the client machines ....sweet!! Now I can watch the morons that think by hiding in the back they can go to porn sites ....gotcha!!

For that I think an easier way would have been capturing a log from the router (if router/gateway device has logging ability).

It has logging abilities ...but they are turned off ....6 computers on each of 5 routers...this is definitely more fun!!
