Remote control in safe mode

Does anyone know of an application that will allow you to remotely reboot a computer into safe mode?

Even better, I'd like to reboot a remote computer into safe mode and then remote control it using something like VNC or Remote Desktop. I can't even get the VNC service to start while a computer is in safe mode.

Ideas?

 

To reboot in Safe Mode, remote to the system and run "msconfig". On the General tab, select "Diagnostic Startup". The next startup will be in Safe Mode. MSconfig doesn't exist in Win2k, IIRC, but the WinXP version does work (beware of liscencing problems if you start copying this file).

I know of no way to accomplish this, but this might work:

1. Connect to the computer in normal mode.
2. Configure the boot.ini file and add a line which boots the system into network-aware Safe mode, and set it as the default OS. Alternately, you
3. Restart the system, wait a minute or two for it to reach the logon prompt.
4. Use sc.exe or PSExec to start the remote service that handles your remote session.

I increasingly doubt this will work, however. I'm fairly certain Windows doesn't start the RPC service in Safe mode, so you won't be able to send any commands at all, and Windows ignores every program autostart location that I'm aware of, even those that happen after login.

There's probably a way to do it, but I can't imagine it will be easy to accomplish.

 

hmm, never tried in safemode but checkout telnet... i beleieve telnet is loaded as a auto service. so....if safemode with networking is selected, it is possible windows telnet may be accessible..

bottom line - what are you ulimately trying to accomplish? maybe there are other methods to reach your goal(s)..
