Remote Desktop troubles

I have been attempting to setup a remote desktop so i can get to my home files from school and the library. I however get the message "Can't connect" "computer might be busy or remote desktop is not enabled". I have it enabled. I believe i might have a dynamic IP though... not sure why i have cable internet. I attempted to create a static IP address but i can't use the internet when i do it so i must be doing it wrong. I also have a home network with 3 computers on it... not setup too well that might be the problem.... PLEASE HELP

 

ok... i got a static ip...now i m confused by LAN and WAN which one am i supposed to be using in remote... LAN is 192.xxx.xxx.xxx correct?

 

need to use your wan ip address if outside the local network, ie at school, then you need to port forward 3389 to your internal address ie the 192.x.x.x as far as a static wan ip, you need to purchase that from your isp, or just hope you wan ip don't change frequently.

 

thx... but one more thing i believe i m doing this right... to port forward i type in the default ip and then select port forwarding and under ip i put in the static ip of my computer... dlink router btw

 

yes, you put whatever ip your computer has in the forward to option, but you shouldn't need to put your wan ip in to anything except the rdp connection window at the remote location your trying to connect from.
