Remote Desktop XPP32 to VistaHP64

Hello all!

I have two machines that I want to be able to connect to from outside my apartment:

• A Windows XP Pro 32-bit machine hard-wired to a Linksys WRT54G.
• A Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit laptop connected wirelessly.

The RDP port on XP was changed to 4000 and forwarded accordingly in the router. The one on Vista remains 3389. The IPs are dynamic, but have not changed as I've been keeping a close eye on them.

After using the hack from this website to add RDP functionality to VistaHP, I am able to successfully use the Vista Laptop to successfully (and quickly) connect to the XP Desktop. However, trying things the other way, from XP to Vista, gives me THIS error, which I've seen oh-so-many times.

When connecting from the laptop, I am able to use all three ways: using the computer name:4000, using 192.168.1.101:4000, and the actual ISP IP:4000. I am also able to see my XP shares from the laptop. I am not able to see the laptop at ALL from the desktop. Could this be a barrier between 32- and 64-bit OSs?

In addition, my firewalls-- both being Kaspersky Internet Security 7-- are completely open for everything RDP-related, and the problem still exists even if it's turned off at both ends. I can connect Vista-to-XP just fine with both firewalls on.

Any help would be appreciated.

 

not all versions of vista or xp actually have the rdp server components, but all have the client.

 

XP Pro has the server, Home just has the client. HP technically has neither, but it can be easily added.
