let me just by saying i am very new to networking.

i have 4 sets of networks, (2 have 4 computers, and 2 have 2 computers), i need to be able to remote into all of them from an outside source and i need to be able to remote into all of the computers on 3 of the networks from one computer on the 4th network. (we have 1 corporate office and 3 satellite offices)

we have static ip address on all the routers and computers, all the os's are windows xp pro but 2, which have vista ultimate.

i am trying to remote in using the windows remote desktop, but i can only go to my network, not to our satellite offices. i am not sure what the problem might be.

    thanks,
    mandy

i am using a program now called laplink, however, it has a lot of problems with it, and i can only get to one computer on a particular network. also it distorts the desktop view, which has to be really exact cause we are reading brain waves.

from what information i was able to gather, the remote desktop through windows will allow me to control any computer i have access to and the display will not be distorted.

the routers i have now are netopia or linksys, i believe. they are nothing too fancy, just enough to be able to program for static dsl.

    thank you,

thank you for your help. that site is great.

i have tried to set up a vpn, but i am not sure what computer name to use, so i used the ip address. still doesn't work. i am not sure if the ip address i should use is the computer ip address or the router ip address, or the static ip address for the internet, or a combination.

so i figured that i have to allow the port through for remote desktop, but then i can only get to one computer (right?).

back to the vpn, does the ip scheme have to be the same, or can one computer (192.168.1.XXX) access another computer with a different ip address (192.168.0.XXX). and then how does my computer know that it should be talking to my other computer and not to someone elses that just happens to have the same ip address?

we used to use go to my pc, but they charge an arm and leg cause we have 12 computers that need to be accessed. and i was also having the same problem with it that i do with the software that we currently use (laplink), because we have to keep the software running at all times, so if it gets turned off.... with the remote desktop in windows no software needs to be on (at least from what i understand) and we only need to "look" at that computer, not trasfer any files.

    thank you,
    mandy

right, then you use that machine to rdp to the others, using the internal network ips from that.
