Remote Procedure Call terminated unexpectedly

To start with, I have TRIED to follow the "READ and RUN ME FIRST Malware removal Guide" but I've encountered a number of problems.
My initial issue was that a few minutes after startup this message comes up, "This system is shutting down. Please save any work in progress and log off. Any unsaved data will be lost. This shutdown was initiated by NT AUTHORITY (yen sign)SYSTEM.
Windows must restart now because the remote procedure call (RPC) service terminated unexpectedly."
It gives me a countdown of one minute before restarting.
If I run in Safe Mode, this doesn't happen.
    So running in Safe mode, I did the following;
    1. Ran AVAST Anti virus. It found one Trojan which I erased because it told me I couldn't access the Virus Chest. It also had about 30 files it said it couldn't scan.
    2. Ran CCleaner.
    3. Opened hidden files.
    4. Downloaded and unzipped Getrunkey and Shownew.
    5. Ran Spybot. It found 4 problems "Win 32" but could only fix 1.
    6. Ran Spybot again, same problem.
7.Downloaded Counterspy. Couldn't open, "The system administrator has set policies to prevent installation"
    8. Downloaded AVG. Got this message when I tried to open it, "Connection to service failed. Please reinstall AVG Anti-spyware 7.5"
    9. Tried to reinstall but got "error opening file for writing."
    10. Downloaded Super Antispy. Same problem as Counterspy "The system administrator has set policies to prevent installation".
At this point the Malware Removal Guide says to unplug from the internet. With my printer not working in either safe or normal mode, and all the problems so far, I thought it better to ask.
    Any ideas?

Please run this:ChodeFix - How download and run

Then follow the procedures in the READ ME for getting the below logs and attach them. If you cannot run in normal boot mode, get them from safe mode (but normal mode would be more useful).

    Attach the below logs:
    • GetRunKey
    • ShowNew
    • HijackThis - make sure it is installed and renamed as requested in step 7 or my next message to you will just be to install it properly.

Hi, I tried to run these in normal mode but everything just froze up so all run in safe mode.

Do you see any weird program names showing in Add/Remove programs? I see the below in your ShowNew log and at least one seems to relate to some possible malware in your other logs:

    ºÐÆ¹°¼®Ý°Ù
    ƒXƒ^[ƒgƒAƒbƒvƒc[ƒ‹

Can you find these and uninstall them whatever they are? If not, just continue with the steps in my next message either way.

Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you
exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
    F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntos.exe,
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_01\bin\jusched.exe"
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [userinit] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntos.exe
    O4 - Global Startup: ƒXƒ^[ƒgƒAƒbƒvƒc[ƒ‹.lnk = ?
    O20 - AppInit_DLLs: C:\WINDOWS\system32\mswlgwl.dll

NOTE: HJT may popup an error about the AppInit_DLLs line. Ignore it and click OK to continue.

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you
    have saved it
double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your
    Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
    Now run Ccleaner!

Now attach the below new logs (see if you can run in normal boot mode) and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. Avenger
    2. GetRunKey
    3. ShowNew
    4. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore
per step 8 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

I did a search for the other two but I can't find them either.
I have some japanese programs on my computer. They sometimes come up as nonsense depending on the regional options setting.

Run HijackThis again and fix the below lines:

    F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Userinit.exe,C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntos.exe,
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [userinit] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntos.exe

    Then exit HJT and reboot.

After reboot, run HJT and get a new log and attach it here.

Okay your log is clean now!

Here is what those two programs are from. NTTW\\CommunicationTool seems legit but the other does not unless you recognize it.

I wouldn't have a clue what that is! I really am a total newb. Thanks heaps for all your help!

    Yeah neither look familiar.

Well they seem to be for something you installed on 04-23-2007. I even see the NTTW folder in c:\Program Files

I don't want to just start deleting registry entries for something that you appear to have installed. Especially since your PC is running OK! You should try to figure out what these are yourself. Keep track of things you install on your PC and what they put in Add/Remove programs.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, and the C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    5. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    6. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    7. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    8. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    9. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Ok, Got the NTTW one. It's something I was told to install and runs on startup. I don't know what it does though. It's all in japanese and I never use it.
The other one, I really have no idea. I'm kinda working in the dark here a lot of the time.

If you can figure out how to uninstall it from Add/Remove programs then uninstall it. Anything that you don't need or that you don't use, should be uninstalled.

  21. superfallingdowngirl

Looks like I managed to remove both or them. I think the other one was the "???????????" I mentioned before.
Thanks again! All seems to be in perfect working order now.
Just as a point of interest, I have gmail notifier running and usually it prompts me to sign in when I start up. In the days before the problem and during the problem, it was just signing me in automatically. Now it's back to normal and prompts me to sign in.
Don't know if that's got anything to do with anything, but thought it might.

    Good job!

Not sure if it was related or not. But as long as things are working okay that's great!
