When I start the computer, compaq desk pro, the desktop appears as normal but there is no start bar. If I click on a desktop icon,it will open for a few seconds before I get a pop-up reading "the system is shutting down, the rpc has suddenly terminated" I get a timer for 60 sec., and it shuts down. This is XP Pro with a P III processor. Thanks in advance, Tommy

Sounds like malware (W32.Sasser.Worm). I would go thru the steps outlined here, http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407

If you are still having problems after you complete the steps, just start a thread in the Malware Forum and ask for help.

Thanks Steve, I can't do any of the steps from those instructions because I can't get a start bar in normal or safe mode. I have icons on the desktop for
ie and e mail and such but if I click on any one of those, I get the shutdown countdown and the machine turns off. I do have access to the settings screen if I right click the desktop and I can change resolution , but thats about it. ? ? ? Thanks, Tommy

OK. Let me get a malware guy to look at this and see if I am actually right. ;)

Moved to Malware forum for you Tommy as one of the Malware experts believes your issues are malware related, so they can assist you.

I know you cannot get the startbar up, but if your keyboard has a windows key ( shoudl be between CTRL and ALT ) does that allow you to access start menu?

It appears that I had some sort of total failure of the hard drive. All I would get now is a blank black screen. I replaced the drive with the original 15 gig hd, and the machine functions properly. There was not a lot of things of value on it,so it is not a disaster. Thanks, Tommy
