You have an MBR infection, do you have your Windows 7 boot CD/DVD?

I have an upgrade disk from Vista to 7 provided by Dell. I have never tried to boot using it. Do you think that will work?

No I don't think it will. There's a recovery disk you can purchase, for a good price.

If you don't have your Win7 disc, you can create a Recovery Environment disc for your system here:

Download Windows 7 System Recovery Discs

You can use ImageBurn to create the disc.

Once the disc is created, boot into the bios and change the boot order to CD/DVD as first boot device. Put in the disc and reboot. Once in the RE, type this:

    Code:
    Bootrec.exe /fixmbr
Note the space after the exe.

Exit out when done and boot back into normal mode. Re-run MBRCheck and attach the new log.

Still have faked MBR etc. See MBR check

Then something you did was not done correctly. You need to try again.

Here's what I did...reran bootrec.exe /fixmbr successfully. Rebooted and then ran MBRcheck with same result ...."Faked MBR" so I went to options...selected 2. which rewrote a default MBR ...."default Windows 7" disk 0 then rebooted and got a blank screen. rebooted into Window RE and ran "fixmbr" and rebooted and now get blank screen with "invalid partition table" and unrecognized C: drive and no OS. FUBAR. Help!!!!! Am using old laptop with XP to communicate.

    • Disconnect or remove all removable or external drives.
    • Restart the computer.
    • Wait for the BIOS status screen to appear.
    • Press and hold the "F8" key as soon as the BIOS screen disappears. This will take you to the Windows "Advanced Boot Options" menu.
    • Select "Repair Your Computer." The Windows 7 Recovery Environment will load.
    • Select your keyboard layout from the drop-down box.
    • Log in using an administrator account, if necessary. The "System Recovery Options" windows will appear.
    • Click "Command Prompt."
    • Type "bootrec /fixmbr" without quotation marks.
    • Wait for the process to finish and restart the computer to see if it worked. If it did not work, repeat steps 2 through 8, then continue to the next step.
    • Type "bootrec /fixboot" without quotation marks at the command prompt.
    • Wait for the process to finish and restart the computer to see if it worked. If it did not work, repeat steps 2 through 8, then continue to the next step.
    • Type "bootrec / RebuildBcd" without quotation marks at the command prompt. If this is not successful, it's likely that the disk is not recoverable and you will have to format the disk and reinstall the operating system.
