Remove disks or other media

    Sepcs: Sony Vaio VGN-FJ290P
    Cannot get into OS to get the rest of the specs, my guess is it is stock with original parts. Every time i try to boot up i receive the error message "Remove disks or other media." I haven't installed a new hard drive, and when I try to reinstall the OS, the system hangs and then the computer shuts down. Any suggestions.

    Hi

    So just so I have this right, the PC has not had a new Hard Drive fitted and before this happened you had a working OS on the drive that could be booted into?

    Try entering your BIOS ( should give you the specific key/s to press at boot ) then check the boot sequence and make sure that either CDROM or Hard Drive is the 1st one, if your PC has no floppy drive and that is for some reason set to 1st boot the PC can error like this.

    No, the hard drive has not been replaced and I assume that the laptop had a working OS prior to this problem. *I'm fixing it for a friend*... I have gone into the BIOS and the boot sequence was Hard Drive > Optical Drive > Floppy... I changed the optical drive to first boot device and tried re-installing Windows, but with no success... It looks like the next possible solution would be replacing the hard drive, but I hesitate to do so in fear that it doesn't work or the problem happens again. If anyone else has had this problem and fixed it, please let me know the solution...

    That sounds like that is my problem... I'll try restoring the boot.ini file and I'll let you know how it works out...
