Remove LOP before downloading SP2?

    Hi,
My kids' PC has the LOP. We are using Windows XP with 4 user accounts. I have tried unsuccessfully to remove LOP. (insert expletives here) I have perused and followed the "read first before posting" sticky about trojans, worms etc. I couldn't run housecall or symantec online scanners in "safe mode with networking" as it failed to make a connection to the host site. Macafee Avert worked though. Anyway, LOP is still on the PC and I was wondering if I should download and install SP2, or should the PC be clean first. Same question applies to Microsoft's beta spyware program. As well, I am going to switch to Mozilla firefox browser but I would like to know if the PC should be disinfected first.
    Thanks a bunch!

Im by far no spyware expert. On contrary.
Apparently applying sp2 with spyware on it or cleaned can bring up alot of issues or headaches. Reinstalling windows might be a good option although Im sure someone will be more optimistic then me.
I remember having lop at one stage and after so many unsucessfull tries i just installed the uninstaler. Seemed to work or maybe i just got lucky.
Try google search for loop uninstaller.
    Good luck.

    Hi Bailmeout:
I have tried to download the installer from a number of sites includer LOP.com itself. I get a security alert saying my system settings wont allow it. Or I get an idle screen or it reverts to a search the web home page. I have also looked in add/remove programs and can find nothing related to LOP.

Lop won't be found in add/remove anyway. one way to get it is with the msn messenger addon. www.mess.be
All I remember after trying numerous things (the little toolbar up the top was easy to get rid of, not so much the little one at the bottom of the browser with all shopping automotive etc. link. Once i downloaded this installer it was basically like a box with letters and numbers which prompted you to type it as you see it. Worked very well for me......
Try this see if it helps you

    Run the lop uninstaller:

Download and use the following uninstallers:
    http://lop.com/new_uninstall.exe
    http://lop.com/toolbar_uninstall.exe

You should also download LSPfix from http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
Use LSPFix if you will lost your internet connection after removing LOP."
Also note. Try doing this while your computer is in dafe mode.

Star17: Thanks for the welcome, I am enjoying the site. Lots of good people and info!!
I read your link from doxdesk. Very good.
So the consensus is, that the PC should be clean before installing SP2?
....and with 4 user accounts do I have to repeat all eradication measures for each account. If so, that will be very time-consuming.

An account with sufficent rights should be good. Admin account. e.g the main one you're using. Perhaps you tried to run the ininstaller with non sufficent rights account?

Bailmeout: Thanks M8 for your help. When attempting fix I used admin with full rights. The other 3 are my kids accounts with limited rights.
    regarding your 2 links:
    http://lop.com/new_uninstall.exe
    http://lop.com/toolbar_uninstall.exe
I just tried them again and I get a security alert window "Your current security settings do not allow this file to be downloaded"
Which is what I wished would of happened when LOP downloaded/installed itself in the first place. So is this security alert for real or is it LOP generated? and what can I do to be able to download the uninstaller?

Do you have a popup blocker?
Try right clicking on file then opening in new window untill eventually you are able to download it.

I disabled pop-up blocker. After many, many attempts at right-clicking the uninstaller.exe files in a new window it finally worked. No security alert window. However, it doesn't download, I just see the cursor with the hour glass. Then finally a page appeared saying "page not displayed" and some search the web propaganda. And now when I try it again I get the security alert window. The internet security was set at medium and still is. Any other suggestions?

Ta da!! Well I think the LOP is gone. Thus ending our cozy little relationship, heh heh.
It appears that Messenger Plus! 3 (Messp3) was the culprit. One of my kids downloaded this and accepted the sponsors scummy applications (lop.com, C2media)
According to the Messp3 people, it seems that Adaware and Spybot scans damage the uninstallation files in some way. (maybe by design, who knows?) So I reinstalled Messp3 and accepted the sponsors files. Then I went to add/remove programs and uninstalled Messp3 and voila! Gone. No more LOP and no more Messp3. I rebooted and repeated the steps with the remaining 3 accounts after assigning them admin rights. So really it was quite easy. The computer is running fast & excellent now, with the correct homepages, no unwanted toolbars and other crap. I'm posting this as perhaps it may help others to eliminate the LOP.
Well that's it and hopefully the problem is solved.
    Cheers.

Glad to hear that. Just incase you wanted to know, once you install messenger plus it actually prompts you to install lop, well in a way anyway. Like i explained before a little box appears with numbers and letters and you have to type them in :p
Anyway as long as it's gone.

Bailmeout: Just to clarify your statement, I respectfully suggest that's not quite the case, when one installs Messenger Plus! 3, one is presented with a EULA type agreement which states that a person can either download Messenger Plus! 3 as a stand alone application, or one can have it bundled with the sponsor's applications. It is worded very clearly and the 2 options are distinct. What isn't very apparent from reading the so-called EULA is just what kind of net effect (read hell) it will have on an individuals PC by downloading and installing the LOP suite of scum. In fact at this point it doesn't even mention LOP.com, it just says "the sponsor." In this regard, the wording is very specifically nebulous. You have to go to lop.com and read what you are agreeing to let them do. So it's very sleazily done in my opinion and it's a little late at this point anyway. And there is no little box with numbers at this stage.
The little box which appears, only occurs during the uninstall procedure, the numbers in the box are there so as computers or robots can't uninstall the programs automatically (or so they say). An actual person, or perhaps, one of those infinite monkeys, must manually type the numbers in the designated area allowing the uninstallation process to finish.
Anyway, that's my experience regarding this.
There's a couple of good articles somewhere else on the net which explains all the goings on with Lop.com/C2media/Messengerplus from both sides, but I am reluctant to provide the links in case it breeches any of this forum's protocols.
A cyber Bundy and Coke to you!
    Cheers
