    Hello

I'm working on an old win98 pc - trying to get it ready for internet use again. My question is: should I uninstall msjvm and replace with the current sun java?

I was able to find the official removal tool, but microsoft has apparently removed it from their site and they have warnings of dire system consequences for using it. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/826878

If anyone has had luck using the removal tool, please comment here.

    thanks

I've used the MSJVM removal tool many times, and never had a problem. The "dire consequences" aren't so bad if you don't plan on going back to the MSJVM.

In fact, majorgeeks recommends it in their How To Protect Yourself From Malware thread.

I've used the manual method posted in forums here without a problem. I have also left both installed and disabled the MSJVM through Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs, Set Program Access and Defaults, Custom. For Win98 use of older software is easier on system resources (I am using a 299MHz Intel Celeron processor, but upgraded RAM from 32 to 250 MB). There is a list of the more (and less) secure versions of java listed here in the forums also. I upgraded to Internet Explorer 6, WMP 7.1, needed to install Microsoft Visual Basic, Windows Installer 2.0, Adobe Reader 505, extractnow utility found on this site, and a fix for Windows update site (read my machine as a mac ;)) found here:

Wish I could use USB 2.0 on Windows 98 as that is how I connect a wireless adapter, but ethernet card installed without a hitch. And as Win98 is formatted with the FAT 32 file system, Sysinternals has a program for reading NTFS from the external hard drive called NTFS for Windows 98. Started searching for older software with www.oldversion.com and later found some (like Sun Java) offer older versions of their software on their web sites. Good luck with you 98 system, it can be a real learning experience after using XP all these years.

Thanks for the advice and the links. I used the removal tool, updated to the newest sun version and everything seems fine. :)
