Initial problem was caused by an automatic download of software. We eliminated the s/w and cleaned the system using the tools suggested by majorgeeks. In addition I have used rkill & tdsskiller.
I have attached the files for you to review.
Issues that we are currently experiencing:
    - trojans & viruses reappear after removal
    - system slow downs
    - search function loops as it shows results
    - power on switch works sporatically sometimes requiring system to be unplugged.

    Thanks for taking a look.

We still need to see the log from C:\MGTools.exe ---> C:\MGlogs.zip

Did you actually fix what MBAM found? It says no action taken.

Whilst I review your other logs please complete the below:

Important Notice: A new version of SUPERAntiSpyware is available.
    • Please uninstall your current version (this is necessary).
    • Then download this SUPERAntiSpyware
    • Install this new version. It may tell you that you need to reboot to complete the installation. You must reboot at this time.
    • After the reboot, run SUPERAntiSpyware and immediately click the Check for Updates button to get more updates for the database.
    • Now run a new full scan of your system. And attach this log later.

MBAM: threats were in quarantine and then removed.
Let me know if you would like me to take additional action.

Superantispyware: s/w was uninstalled and reinstalled and system was rebooted. log attached...

    thanks for your help.

Then you need to tell me the exact file and file path of these threats. What software picks up on them?

Java(TM) 6 Update 22 <--- Uninstall this outdated version of Java.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    DirLook::
    C:\~ErdUserProfile.$$$
    File::
    C:\Documents and Settings\Debbie\Application Data\2FAA.EC8

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Also delete all files in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).

Reboot your machine and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

How are things running now? Don't forget to address my question.

trojans & viruses have been most recently picked up by symantec antivirus; example is attached.
    I uninstalled and re-installed Java.
    I ran combofix. log attached.
    deleted files in: C:\WINDOWS\temp
However, there is a folder in C:\Documents and Settings\Debbie\Local Settings\TEMP, not any files. The folder is called boost_interprocess. Would you like me to delete the entire folder?

    mglogs.zip is attached.

How is it running? IE is still dragging.

Stuff caught up in system restore which will no longer be picked up on once you have followed final steps.

Well, it is not looking like that is due to malware. You can further discuss this in the software forum if need be. :) If that's your only remaining problem, and there are no actual malware problems, then you can follow the below steps:

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

  9. Somemelvin1

    Are the logs clean?
What about MBAM? ("no action taken" per your previous note)
Is the backdoor trojan gone? (symantec continues to bring this to my attention, although I haven't seen a new message in a few days.)
Firefox is now not loading properly saying "The proxy server is refusing connections." This just started; is it related to the cleaning process we performed?
What about the C:\Documents and Settings\Debbie\Local Settings\TEMP directory?

From what I can see yes.
If it is not warning you about anything then you have nothing to worry about.
I don't think so. Are you running theough a proxy? (It does not look like it)
    Empty everything in there.

You're welcome. Let me know about Malware Bytes. If it is still picking up on anything or not.

"let me know about malware bytes" do you want me to rerun it? When I said "threats were in quarantine and then removed," it was before I sent you the log. It makes me wonder if perhaps they weren't removed completely since the log did not record the action.

Firefox: I am not running it through a proxy. I uninstalled it and then reinstalled it. I'm still encountering the same problem.

new problem: pop-up box in the lower right hand corner saying: "Symantec Antivirus Auto Protect is Disabled". It pops up and disappears after 5 seconds or so. When I check, the auto protect is still running.

    Thank you.

Well, run it again and see if it detects anything! :)

In Firefox go to Tools > Options > Advanced > Network tab. The the Settings button.
    Ensure No proxy is checked.
    Not a malware problem.

    You're welcome.

I re-ran the MBAM and it came out clean.

Your suggestion about Firefox was on the money and it is working perfectly now! More importantly, I am not experiencing response issues compared to IE. I will research recommended security & privacy settings for IE7 as a possible fix to the IE7 issues. Any suggestions you might have would be welcome.

Lastly, from a second account on my system I have just started experiencing two error windows on login. I have attached copies of the errors. One indicates that windows cannot find a file. After clicking "ok" the second window indicates that it couldn't find a file specified in the registry. thoughts?

... I have typed the error messages below since the file screen shots were too large to attach:

Windows cannot find ‘C:\DOCUME~1\lincofa\LOCALS~1\Temp\csrss.exe’. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.

Could not load or run “C:\DOCUME~1\lincofa\LOCALS~1\Temp\csrss.exe’ specified in the registry. Make sure the file exists on your computer or remove the reference to it in the registry.

Hmm, give ccleaner a run, then reboot and run Malware Bytes again, fix anything it may find and attach the log! :)

You followed final steps already? That error message is definately malware but it was in a temporary location. Let me know if you followed final steps or not.

    Yes, I followed final steps.
Does it matter that I ran CClean on one user account?

I want you to run all the scans except for MBAM on this other account that you speak of. Attach logs when ready. :)

I am not seeing any problems. C:\Documents and Settings\lincofa\Application Data\2FAA.EC8 <--- delete this file using windows explorer.

    Run CCleaner

    Run this.

Go to TDSSKiller and Download TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop

    • Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    • Now double click the TDSSkiller.exe file to run it ( if using Vista or Windows 7 do not double click on it but rather, right click and select Run As Administrartor.
    • Allow the application to run and a window will open showing that it is TDSSkiller from Kaspersky
    • Click Start scan
    • It will run rather quickly and will notify you of whether anything is found or not.
    • Follow the instructions to delete/quarantine if asks you what to do when if finds something.
Whether an infection is found or not, a log file should be created on your C: drive ( or whatever drive you boot from) in the root folder named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

Are you still getting the error you mentioned?

    Deleted file and ran CClean.
    attached log from TDSSKiller.
The error messages are not appearing anymore!

Does this mean when running majorgeeks suggested malware tools, users need to run them on each individual account when trouble shooting for malware?

At this point I am only left with the following 2 trouble spots. Per your suggestion, I will contact the software forum for assistance.
    1) Power on button from a cold boot will not work. The button just slowly flashes green and requires the system to be unplugged. However, it will immediately work if the system has just been turned off.
    2) a yellow pop-up box in the lower right hand corner saying: "Symantec Antivirus Auto Protect is Disabled". It pops up and disappears after 5 seconds or so. When I check, the auto protect is still running.

Shall I execute your "final steps" on this account too?
    Thanks for all your help.

    Good.

Yes, if you're experiencing malware like problems on more than one account then definately run scans on the affected ones.

    Yes.
You're welcome. Any remaining problems will have to be discussed in the software forum. :)
