Hello, I was running windows malicious software removal tool and it said that it partially removed Trojan:dos/alureon.E . I have read several of your threads on removing this. I went ahead and did the TDSkiller, rkill, MBR check, and listparts.exe. I am running win XP pro 32 bits. I went ahead and attached some the results in hopes that you can review them and help me get rid of it. I have done the malwarbytes but it doesn't catch anything in either safe mode or regular. I definetly think that I have the hidden partition that the alureon creates. Thanks again.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

You have an infection in your partition table. Please get me a log from MGtools as requested in the below.

    Using MGtools

Also do you have your Windows XP boot CD? If not, then make the CD in the below instructions BUT JUST make the CD. Do not run the fixmbr yet!!!!!!!!! Once you have burned the CD, don't do anything else with it. Just tell me when you have it.

    Fix MBR using ARCDC

Thanks, I will run the MGtools tonight after work. I found 3-disks the say recovery on them. I need to double check by I assume these are what I need.

No these are not what you need. Make the CD I mentioned.

Made the cd as asked. I have not done anything with it.

Okay and now you will need to make another special bootable CD containing G-Parted which we will use to fix your partitions. You actually have a new form that added two infected partitions. Then we will fix your MBR using the first CD I had you make.

    Please download: gparted-live-0.11.0-7.iso (114 MB)
Create a bootable CD for GParted. You can use ImgBurn to accomplish this.
If you need help on how to use ImgBurn, please view this guide by dr.m -- Using ImageBurn to Burn an ISO image

Now boot off of the newly created GParted CD.
    http://img717.imageshack.us/img717/6546/gpartedsplash01107.th.png
    You should be here...
    Press ENTER
    http://img819.imageshack.us/img819/7286/gpartedkeymaps.th.png
By default, do not touch keymap is highlighted. Leave this setting alone and just press ENTER.
    http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/9840/gpartedlanguage.th.png
Choose your language and press ENTER. English is default [33]
    http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/7958/gpartedgui.th.png
Once again, at this prompt, press ENTER
You will now be taken to the main GUI screen below
    http://img32.imageshack.us/img32/1122/gpartedo.th.png
According to your logs, the partitions that you want to delete are

    • 2.48 MiB (2.48 MB) and
    • 1.00 GiB (1.00 GB)
Click the trash can icon to delete and then click Apply.
You should now be here confirming your actions.
Do the same for bott partitions we want to delete.
    http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/1533/gpartedsteps.th.png
    Now you should be here:
    http://img696.imageshack.us/img696/8471/gpartedsuccessclose.th.png
Is boot next to your OS drive? According to your logs, your OS drive is the 64.06 GB sized partition.
    http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/7753/gpartedboot.th.png
If boot is not next to your OS drive under Flags, right-mouse click the OS drive while in Gparted and select Manage Flags

In the menu that pops up, place a checkmark in boot like the picture below:
    http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/3483/gpartedmanageflagsboot.th.png
Now press the Close button to save these changes.
    Now double-click the http://img822.imageshack.us/img822/641/gpartedexit.png button.
You should receive a small pop up like this:
    http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/8986/gpartedexitreboot.png
Choose reboot and then press OK.

Now reboot and use the ARCDC cd you made to boot to the Recovery Console and run the fixmbr command ( see the Fix MBR using ARCDC thread again ). The reboot normally as instructed.

Once back in Windows Re-run another scan with MBRCheck and attach its latest log.

Also run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

do I need to make this disk from a clean computer? Made disk from my infected computer and it would not boot from CD. What am I doing wrong.

  9. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

While potentially a good thing to do, it is not normally necessary.

Are you sure you made it a bootable disk from the ISO image. You cannot just burn the ISO file to the disk. That would just be a data disk. You need to make it a bootable disk from the image. Also you may need to configure the boot order in your BIOS to boot from CD first before trying to boot from hard disk.

The same logic is true for the ARCDC CD, it is being made as a bootable CD and you have have your boot oder in BIOS set properly.

  10. slokes76

    slokes76 Private E-2

I used the Imgburn program to make the iso disk. I followed all the steps so I assume it is a bootable disk. I also followed the procedure layed out for the ARCDC disk. I will check my Bios.

  11. slokes76

    slokes76 Private E-2

The gparted live had the number 0.11.0-10 This is different than the number you had listed.

  12. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

That's fine. It has been updated since the procedure was written. It still works the same.

Test the CDs you made on another PC if necessary to see if they are bootable. Many many people use these procedures each week to make bootable CDs. As long as the CDs are made properly and the BIOS is setup properly, they will work. One other potential problem that some people have had is and issue with the CD/DVD drive itself.

  13. slokes76

    slokes76 Private E-2

I have both bootable cds now. I have made sure they work on other computers so I will attempt the fix in the next few days.

  14. slokes76

    slokes76 Private E-2

when testing the ARCDC bootable disk it took me to a blue screen with a few options on reloading windows xp. I exited at this point. I hope this sounds correct.

  15. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

Actually when you used the words "blue screen" I though you meant your PC crashed, but the rest of the sentence does not seem to say this. What I need to know is if you followed the instructions and did you get to the Command Prompt. You don't want to reload Windows. You want to boot into the command prompt of the Recovery Console.

  16. slokes76

    slokes76 Private E-2

ran first disk as told and deleted the two smallest partions. However the smallest one was still showing up in the window. But I could not select delete any more. There was also another partion that showed up as 7.3 MB. Anyway closed out as asked and booted from the arcdc disk. When selecting R for recovery it brought up a screen that says setup could not find any hard disk drives installed. It says make sure hard disk drives are powered on and connected properly and disk related hardware config is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer supplied diagnostic or setup program

  17. slokes76

    slokes76 Private E-2

I went back and ran g parted again. It looks like I have two unallocated partitions on dev/sda1 and 1 unallocated partition on dev/sdb1. The sizes are 7.8mb 1.01mb and 2.49mb on sdb1. Not sure if they should be there.

  18. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

Are you sure you only deleted the partitions requested and nothing else? It sounds to me like you deleted your Windows partition if no alllocated partition is showing on sda1

Also are you sure that you set your Windows partition to be the boot partition as requested in the instructions? Does the boot flag show next to it?

  19. slokes76

    slokes76 Private E-2

On sda1 it shows my largest partition on top and it is labeled as the OS. Next is some sort of unallocated partition that is 7.8mb then it list my backup partition and after that is another unallocated partition that is 1.01mb. On sdb1 there is the major partition for data listed and under that there is a partition that is 2.49mb(unallocated). Also the OS partition did say boot next to it under the flag column.

  20. slokes76

    slokes76 Private E-2

Is it possible my ARCDC disk is not working properly?

  21. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

I'm not sure. Did you follow the instructions closely? Are you able to boot from it and can you get to a command prompt? If not exactly where do you get too.

Also, what happens when you simply boot up your PC normally?

  22. slokes76

    slokes76 Private E-2

i can boot from the CD. It takes me to screen where It gives me some options. One of them is entering r for the recovery console. At this point it brings up the message I typed below. When rebooting it brings up the screen of how you would like to start your computer (safe mode, or normal). Started into safe mode and this worked. I then restarted into normal windows. The computer seemed to start and run fine.

Okay then let's see where things stand.

Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista or Win7, make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Now attach the below log:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip

Okay there is more to do. It looks like you may be missing some items from your Start Menu, QuickLaunch....etc.

Please download and save the below to your Desktop or anywhere else you can find it ( if the Desktop is not showing )

    http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/unhide.exe

Now run it ( if you are running Vista or Win 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator ). Did that help with your missing items?

Now uninstall the below old versions of software:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
    Java(TM) 6 Update 13
    Java(TM) 6 Update 3
    Java(TM) 6 Update 7
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win 7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)

    O18 - Filter hijack: text/html - {27f5a158-1e64-4ffa-b928-bb3e40161a17} - C:\WINDOWS\msvideo.dll
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
See the download links under this icon http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/dll.gif
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Do not change any check box options!!
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:
    • Now click the Execute button.
    • Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    • Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    • Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Also delete all files in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    C:\WINDOWS\TEMP

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\avenger.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

  30. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Tons of Thanks, I appreciated all your work. Awesome job.
I assume my master boot record does not need to be fixed after deleting the hidden partition.

I thought we already did that but perhaps I forgot or lost track of what we really got to run due to the issue you had with ARCDC. So let's check.

Please re-run MBRcheck and attach the new log.

Okay the MBR still shows as unknown. Are you able to properly boot up the ARCDC boot CD now to get to the command prompt as indicated in the instructions in the below link?

    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=242982

If the CD is not working properly on this PC, see if it works properly on another PC if you have one. This would just be a test to see if the CD gets you to the command prompt and nothing more.

  35. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

There is also something NEW showing in your MBRcheck log. The below driver is seen:

    0xF7512000 dfbenz.sys

It was not in previous logs so I'm wondering it maybe you have picked up a new round of infections. I think we should rerun a couple of other scans to check things out. If you have complete final instructions these tools may be gone and will have to be redownloaded.

Goto the below link and follow the instructions for running TDSSKiller from Kaspersky
    • Be sure to attach your log from TDSSKiller
Download and run combofix.exe which you did not previously run as part of our standard cleaning procedure. If you had previously downloaded it, it is already out of date, so download the new version.

    • the TDSSkiller log
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip

I will do. This computer has not been used for any unusual internet activitiy. It was probably used to go to youtube, facebook, checking email, casual browsing of common websites. Is this something that is left over from before? I rerun the MRT command for windows and it did not say I had any problems as it did before.

performed all 3 commands. When running the combofix it had to download from microsoft for the recovery console. It looked like it worked ok. I attached the logs. I had to uninstall my AVG before combofix would run. Can I reinstall avg?

One other thing. I restarted my computer after doing everything you asked. The computer was kind of running weird/slow after that. After letting it get up and running for 10 minutes or so it seems normal. Let me know if I can reinstall my anitvirus AVG.

  39. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

Not until we are finish with all of your cleaning. Reinstalling AVG would only hinder the ability to finish this process and if we need to run ComboFix again, you would definitely just have to uninstall it again.

  40. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

This would not be due to what was run. Very little was changed. Only combofix removed a few insignificant items and none of them would impact performance at all.

We still need to repair your MBR on drive C. A few messages back I asked you the below but you did not answer[/QUOTE]

I had a friend try the disk on his xp pro computer. The disk did not work. He made me ARCDC disk from his but I have not tried it. However the one he made did not work on his computer either. He said he might beable to get me a win xp pro disk, would this work instead of the ARCDC cd?

    Should I reinstall my antivirus?

  42. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

What exactly does "did not work" mean? I would like to know what is happening? How far do you get? Is it starting to boot from the CD? Or not booting at all from the CD? If you do not have your PC BIOS set to boot from CD before the harddisk, perhaps that is your problem. Also if you are not actually burning a bootable disk and just making a data disk, that would also be a problem.

    It should.

No. I already stated this and why in message # 39.

  43. slokes76

    slokes76 Private E-2

the recovery disk did not work it has an error when hitting R to go to the recovery. The does boot. However when I ran combo fix it it changed my computer so that when you start up the computer it gives me an option to boot to the recovery console. I did this and it worked. I'm now at the recovery console. It is now asking which windows install would like to log onto. What do you want me to do now?

  44. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

Many times when there is a real MBR infection, using an installed copy of the Recovery Console will not allow the infection to be fixed because you are still running the infected MBR when you allow the hard disk to be run which is what you do with the installed version of the RC that ComboFix added for you. But try the below anyway.

Select your Windows partition which is normally #1 C:\windows

Then at the command prompt, type in the below commands. The second will cause a reboot and you should boot back to normal Windows

    fixmbr
    exit

After reboot, rerun MBRcheck and attach the new log.

  45. slokes76

    slokes76 Private E-2

I have a windows xp pro disk. Do you want me access the RC from the xp pro disk method or by the combofix option? Before I run the Fixmbr command.

  46. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

Try booting the the Win XP CD and see if you can even boot with it to the Recovery Console. If you can, then run the commands.

  47. slokes76

    slokes76 Private E-2

I was able to boot from recovery disk that I made and also from one than another friend made and also from windows xp pro disk. All three disks took me to the screen which asked to enter R to take you to the recovery console. After entering R I was taken to a screen which said "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer" Cannot proceed.

I was however to boot into the recovery console with the combofix option. I did this and ran fixmbr. I have attached the MBR log.
