Does anyone have experience uninstalling Windows 7 on an HP laptop? Or, failing that, created a dual boot with Windows XP?

*Please do not tell me why Windows 7 is better.

Assuming you have each OS on its own partition...
Set Xp to boot by default, boot to xp and delete or format the win 7 partition

Also assuming there are Windows XP drivers for this laptop.

Yes, that is what you want to research first. Google the model of your notebook and drivers and XP to see if anyone has put together a collection.

Then you could probably shrink down your Win7 partition and make a new one for XP. Install XP and then modify the boot files to give a choice. This way you could test if you like XP on the notebook without losing Win7 forever. (If you do a dual boot ot XP or single install then your recovery partition with become useless so you had better make sure you have burnt your recovery DVDs as they will be your only recourse to do a factory restore.)

That is more or less what I want to do. I need to know how to go about doing it.

Just Playin: I found some drivers for XP but not specifically for the notebook in question. I am going to assume it can work all the same but I need some more advice on how to begin this.

sach2: your advice sounds good although I'm not quite sure how to get to that point. And regarding recovery discs: I started to make them but the laptop froze during the 4th DVD. I blew 4 DVDS for nothing because the only option I could find was to make a system image recovery discs.
Is there some way to make a back up of the OS?
EDIT: as opposed to system image backup? it's so cheap and cheezy of microsoft not to give an obvious option to make an os backup :(

You really need to get a full set of recovery discs burnt properly. Usually an Hp computer will only allow you to burn one copy. If that copy failed (at a cost of 4 DVDs about $2.00 then you should try again. If it fails again then contact HP and ask for a FREE set of discs because THEIR program failed. Recovery discs are important and you are entitled to them--almost every manufacturer will provide you with discs when you can't burn them properly.)

Please get a guaranteed way back to a working laptop before you move on to changing things that may or may not work the way you want.

You could also run XPMode inside your W7 machine if it's capable. I wouldn't fool around with OEM crap and changing OS's though, that's a minefield to avoid.
