Is it possible to do a repair install without a CD? If so how do you do it? If it is not possible, then where can I get the CD from for my system. I do not believe my system came with installation disc.

    System stats:

    Microsoft Windows XP
    Home edition
    Version 2002
    Service Pack 3

    Dell Dimension DE051
    Intel (R)
    Celeron (R) CPU 2.66GHz
2.66 Ghz, 1.50 GB of Ram

    145 GB total size.

    Greetings, semenoff1948...

I could be wrong, but I don't think you can do a repair install without a valid Windows disk...

    A few options:

    1. There could be a repair partition on your computer's hard drive: check in My Computer or Windows Explorer, and see if there's a partition that you did not create...

    2. Borrow an XP disk - you won't be able to install XP without paying Microsoft for a license, but you should be able to access the repair console...

    3. If this is a Dell OEM machine, you might be able to contact Dell with your service tag number and request replacement disks...

I hope that's not the case. I thought you were able to boot from a flash drive?

I am unable to boot my computer normally anymore due to the fact I accidentally deleted some major necessary computer files. The service pack files.

I can access repair console. What do I do from there? Also, I can't borrow a disc. Where can I just get one from if I need it?

Can you explain this further? Where do I locate my service tag number?

The service tag is usually located on the side, top, or rear of the machine, most often near the Windows certificate decal - for instance, on this work computer, the service tag is imprinted on the top rear of the case: 3T8VDK1...you can plug this sequence into the Dell site, and get a complete rundown of specs, available updates, etc...with this service tag, I could also request replacement operating system, driver, and applications disks...

Dell will not give nor sell a windows CD. Dell will give or sell you a recovery disk which reverts the system to the factory specs. But there is a recovery partition on your hard drive.
    1. When the Dell splash screen appears during the computer startup process, press and hold <Ctrl> and then press <F11>. Then, release both keys at the same time.
    2. In the Dell PC Restore by Symantec window, click Restore. Alternatively, press <Tab> to highlight Restore, and then press <Enter>.

If I were you, semenoff1948, I'd be asking all my friends and a few of my enemies if they have a windows CD that can be borrowed.

I mean is there just a way that I can just do a repair install without getting rid of my files that are on my computer right now. Also, what about booting from a flash drive?
