Repairing Windows XP Problems

I'm having trouble with copy errors during windows xp home repair. I boot from the disc, choose R=Repair on my current windows installation, it goes as far as entering my product key, and then not too long after I get a copy error. It states, "Setup cannot copy the file (filename)" from my cd drive/i386 folder. The files are there on the disc and it is not a corrupt disc as I have tried multiple discs. The files are in the i386 directory when I click browse but it will not install them. There are multiple files including the first, licwmi.dl_ and ieexplorer.ex_. If I skip them, then not everything will work when windows boots, correct?

I do not want to do a clean install as I have data on the hd I do not want to lose. I have tried a different cd drive as well as replacing the memory with known working memory to no avail. This all started with viruses on the computer, i ran combofix and then it would no longer boot to windows. So I am doing a repair to get all my windows files reinstalled.

This is very frustrating and I am out of options. Thanks for any help.

If you have the resources, make a copy of your windows CD to your hard drive and install from there.

A straight copy CD of your windows, made on another pc might also do the trick.

However one of the reasons for problems with a repair install is that the service pacck version of Windows being repaired is not the same as the CD, due to updates etc.

How can I make a copy of the CD on the hard drive? Is there an easy way without booting to the desktop?

On your second option, when you say straight copy CD, you mean get a DVDR and copy the i386 files directly to a CD?

What about copying the files from another windows installation onto a thumb drive?
