Hi, computer is an old gateway laptop, running Vista Home Premium 32-bit. I ran a test on the hard drive and it found some bad sectors, so I replaced the hard drive, cloning it from the old one. I've cleaned off the malware, http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=248172&highlight=malware+cleanup

At first Windows Update wasn't working, and running sfc would return an error (Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service), I was able to get the update working and sfc to run by doing this registry fix, http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_vista-system/windows-modules-installer-error126/2a45788d-c1e5-4b62-a5b1-2410cbcbf813 (the one marked most helpful with 8 votes)

Now when I run sfc it gets 37% through and comes up saying it found problems but cannot repair them, to look at the CBS.log file. I tried running it in safe mode with the same results. Looking at the log file I see these lines,
    Code:
    POQ 31 ends.

Not quite sure what that's telling me.

I also tried doing a windows repair install, http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88236-repair-install-vista.html but I don't get that same blue screen that they show, I get a white\grey one that only has the option to do a fresh install. Not sure if this is because my cd has sp2 and the computer is only running sp1 currently? Or maybe it has something to do with it being a gateway. I did try running the startup repair (where you press F8 on startup, go to "Repair you computer", then to "Startup Repair") it didn't find any problems. I don't have any recovery points to go back to.

I guess I'm looking for advice on fixing the sfc problems, or if\how I can do a repair install. The only problem I'm really still seeing is that there are about 10 unknown isapi network devices listed in the device manager. Having the problem with running windows update and sfc makes me a little nervous too though.

    Thanks!

I tried a little more with installing the drivers for those devices. They are actually called Microsoft ISATAP adapters. When I told it to install the driver for one it tried for a bit then came up with an error saying "Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service." Under the device manager they say "Reinstall the drivers for this device. (Code 18)"

I tried manually downloading and installing sp2, I get an error saying "you need to install windows vista service pack 1 before continuing". Then I manually downloaded sp1 when I run that I get, "service pack 1 is already installed"

Is a fresh install out of the question?? If not, that may be the best bet. Sorry!!!!Hope someone comes along with a better idea.
