Are there any issues in doing this (the statement in the title)?
My IDE optical drive needs the rubber band piece replaced so in the mean time I am just replacing the drive.

Are the optical drives for desktops all a standard size? Or do I need to deal with measurements?

    HP Pavilion a6040n

Optical drive that I am taking out:
    Lightscribe(?) DH-16AYH113C

Drive that I am putting in:
    Asus BW-16D1HT/BLK/G/AS

    That's called the drive belt.

As long as the HP's motherboard has an available SATA drive interface, and you have the necessary SATA data cable, then sure, you can replace the drive. All the physical dimensions and mounting screw locations are exactly the same. Note that SATA drives use a different power connection too so you will need to make sure your power supply has the necessary cable already, or use one of these adapters.

Ok, thanks. I am going to need to get one of the power adapters.

They are pretty common. Most people who have been into computers for awhile have several tossed in a drawer or bin somewhere.

I have a pretty good supply of small parts (actually mostly video cables/ converters) but not that. I have a power supply coming in the mail. Small chance it has one but probably not.

Is this power supply for this computer? If so, surely it will come with SATA power connectors and you won't need the adapter.

No, it's one for my other computer

Okay. Then you are probably right and it probably will not come with an adapter.
