I have a 2006 Compaq Presario 5005V with XP Home Edition. After leaving a hotel on vacation a couple weeks ago my computer wouldn't log onto the internet and I held the power button to shut down. After that it wouldn't restart. I did a recovery install of XP and was able to get the computer to turn on. Just prior to booting up completely, the computer would turn off and keep going through that cycle again and again. I researched since then and have the error codes and the event log information. I have tried everything I knew how to in Microsoft's information about fixing code: c000021a and nothing has worked. So here are all of the error codes on the BSOD and the event log info.

c00021a fatal system error. Windows subsystem process terminated unexpectedly 0x0000005 at 0x7c9106c3, 0x0058f36c (this last code has varied a couple of times) but this is the one most frequently appearing.

The event log has 6 events all saying "device attached to the system is not functioning. EventID: 7001.

I have tried unplugging everything from USB and power source. I have tried last known good config. I have corrected registry errors. I can't do an inplace reinstall of XP because it was pre-installed on the computer and my disk doesn't have that feature.

I would appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks!

Hi jtktft and wecome to MG's,

You need to make a new thread in the malware part of the forum...

    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407

follow these instructions and post the logs along with your new thread.

The error codes you are getting are in relation to a virus that is on your machine, and, as you have gathered, can not be remedied by the usual route of doing a repair install or any of the other fixes you have tried.
The Experts across at the Malware section will hopefully have you up and running again soon.

The malware guy said it rarely causes BSOD. Are you sure? How can I download and run the recommended malware software when all I can boot is in safemode?

I believe I answered that question in your malware thread. You need to download the scanning tools to a different computer and transfer them via CD to the infected machine.

Done a bit more research and I still believe this to be a malware/virus issue.
But to try other things.I found this fix.

If you ARE able to get into safe mode, there’s a good chance that you are dealing with one of the following:
a: A corrupt file, insert your particular flavor of file corruption here. If that’s the case, start by doing the following while in Safemode:
    1. Run “chkdsk /f on all drives” from a command prompt.
    2. Defragment your partitions. A file can become so fragmented as to be corrupt and a simple Defrag can fix this.
    3. Run MSCONFIG and disable half of the items loading on Start Up. Then reboot. If the system boots normally, the problem is probably one of the items that you disabled. In that case, continue enabling half items and rebooting until you find out which one it is.

b: A bad driver or driver install. When you have a bad driver or driver install, you can use a reghack to start the installer service and uninstall the offending driver(s) to get the system stable again. You will need stable drivers to reinstall. I’m sure you can figure out where to get those.

This is the reghack to start Windows Installer Service is:

    REG ADD “HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\MSIServer” /VE /T REG_SZ /F /D “Service”
    net start msiserver

    REG ADD “HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Network\Minimal\MSIServer” /VE /T REG_SZ /F /D “Service”
    net start msiserver

c:try removing the battery and just run from the mains, could be a faulty cell.

But like I say I honestly believe this to be viral. TimW has already instructed as to how to load the necessary software to run the scans. If the scans are clean then I would suggest that probably the only way you can resolve this is with a fresh install of your OS, which would mean a total loss of all data, if this is the case then you can use this ....http://majorgeeks.com/Ultimate_Boot_CD_d4981.html ... create a bootable disc using this... http://majorgeeks.com/ImgBurn_d4870.html ..... the disc you create will boot the machine so that you can drag your personal data off the HDD.

I posted all of the data from doing the malware guide in the malware section and they found nothing and suggested I post back here. Here is the link to the log files and also their response from malware.

    Hi jktft,
I feel that this is the only solution available to you, if you have tried the fix in #5 and that failed!!!
