Hello, I recently bought Resident evil 5 on halloween sale on Steam. After I installed and tried to launch it, all I had was the mouse cursor and the blank black screen after I see the Nvidia, Dolby, Capcom logos. No error message, nothing, just blank and silent.

    my system specs are

CPU: Intel core i5 2.6 Ghz quad
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GT 330, 2 Ghz
    OS: Windows 7 64bits
    Ram: 4 GB
    DirectX 11

I ran the game as an administrator, I already updated my GPU drivers and reinstalled the game. One thing is that when i run the game, there's an option window pop up, force me to choose DirectX 9 or DirectX10 version of RE5. Whether I choose 9 or 10 its still the same blank screen. As my system has 11I have no clues what to do. I'm a huge RE fan and make me feel bad as I installed it and stil can't touch it. Please help!

It goes completely blank because the game can't use DirectX 11. Download DirectX 9 here and make sure you run the installer "as Administrator", reboot, and try running the game again.

Additionally, running the installer in WinXP compatibility mode might help. Pop in the CD, cancel the autorun installer, browse to the CD, right-click-Open, find the installer file (usually called setup.exe or autorun.exe; if you can't tell which file is the installer, open the autorun.inf with Notepad, it will tell you which file is the installer), right-click the installer file and select "Properties", then select the "Compatibility" tab... it's self explanatory from there.

DX11 is 'backwards compatible' to DX10/9 (AFAIK). I run many DX9 and DX10 games on Win7X64 (DX11) and have never had to install DX9/10 separately.

(BTW - I have RE5 on my Win7X64 system and it installed and runs perfectly)

Good call, dlb. It's definitely worth a shot to install in compatibility mode.

With Steam it works a bit different though. In order to install in compatibility mode like that you will need to run the entire Steam client in compatibility mode (that would be the steam.exe file in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam). If you do that, the client will give you a warning that compatibility mode sucks and should never be done because kittens will die.

Ahem. I may have paraphrased that a bit. :p

Anyways. Ignore the warning, run the client to install the game, then go back to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam and remove compatibility mode from steam.exe, since it really doesn't do anything to help you under normal circumstances. Then try the game again.

And do install DirectX 9. DX11 is supposed to be backwards compatible, but that only works if the game knows that and uses only the plain vanilla DX dll files. I've played several Windows XP games that refused to run in DX 11 because one single dll they needed just wasn't there. I have DX9 on both my Win7 computers, just because it makes life easier that way. :)

yes, as I downloaded and installed the game directly from steam, I don't have any disc. And like mimsy said, when I tried to run steam in compatibility mode, theres a message pop up.
I have quite a few games (from super old ones to recent releases) in steam and they all can go smoothly. Just this RE5. I have't install directX 9 yet. I don't know whether directX 9 can be installed on 7(64) DirectX11, but now I'm gonna try to install DirectX 9.
Lets' see what happens :D thank you guys

It's perfectly okay to ignore the pop-up warning, since compatibility mode makes no difference t all. I ran it for a month on accident once, and didn't even notice. :)

It can, I have DX9 on the Windows 7 computer I'm typing this from. It was the only way to make Jade Empire run at all. It did the same thing your RE5 is doing, showed all the logos, then went to black screen because it couldn't load the game graphics without DX9.

well, its been 8 solid months since i gave up on this.
now steam is on summer sale and i bought a few titles on promotion. all games i bought can play well except one, splinter cell conviction. Ubisoft game launcher crash problem.
then my urge to run RE5 on my comp pop out again. 8 months ago, i tried to install directX 9, but couldn't installed it, i got an error msg (i think it because i run it from external disk). since then i didn't try RE5 anymore. but yesterday, i managed to install directX 9 by running directly from the download link, instead of saving it on my comp. But RE5? no avail :( actually i forgot to save it in the first place so that i could run it as an administrator.
Now, i got 2 issues, this RE5 blank screen and Splinter Cell Conviction launcher fail.
the Ubisoft launcher error msg is " Missing Command Line Parameter - Prodid, see integration guide for more information", i see people screaming for this error when i google it. but not exactly as i'm facing it. when i launch the SC-C the ubisoft launcher started, then it tries to Update, then poof, clean desktop.
    Please help.
