Resolution all wonky! GPU perhaps?

Hey so today I booted up my PC and my res. was set to 640x480. Obviously this caused a bit of alarm. The resolution was locked and I couldn't change it. After a while of messing around I was able to force my GPU into a 1280x720 but anything higher causes a black screen. My usual native resolution is 1680x1050.

I tried to reinstall/update my drivers but to no prevail. I'm assuming this isn't a graphics card issue because well... the machine still recognizes the GPU and I was able to install drivers and such. But I don't know. Any help on this???

Here's sys. specs.

CPU : E6600
GPU: Radeon HD 5870
MOBO: P5W DH Deluxe
RAM: Corsair XMS 2 4 1gb sticks.
PSU: OCZ GameXstream 600W PSU ( I think, might be 700w)
HDD: Western Digital 640gb 7200 RPM
SPU: Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeMusic 7.1
OS: Windows 7
Optical Drives: LITE-ON DVD/CD IDE

Solved.

I got 2 tests for you, but before:
1) Reset monitor to factory default settings
2) make sure the cable going from your monitor to your video card is well plugged in and screwed in on both end and that it's not cut up anywhere.
3) Update DirectX, just in case.

#1 If you don't have an available backup graphic card:
1) Download a driver cleaner (I recommend Guru3D driver sweeper)
2) Uninstall drivers, reboot
3) Run the driver cleaner in safe mode if possible
4) re-install drivers

Most of the time, when I have seen this issue, it's either broken drivers or broken hardware between the video card and the connectors.

#2 If you have a back up graphics card
1) Download a driver cleaner (I recommend Guru3D driver sweeper)
2) Uninstall drivers, reboot
3) Run the driver cleaner in safe mode if possible
4) Install back up graphics card
5) Install appropriate drivers to graphics card
