I cannot for the life of me get my monitor to display at its native resolution, i installed vista this morning and have been having a hell of a time with things since.

I'm using an Acer al1916w on a Geforce fx 5700, i've got the latest drivers from Nvidia installed. 1440x900 isn't even listed in the display properties. Its killing my eyes to use this weird resolution so if you can help i'd appreciate it.

Whats your refresh rate set to? if not 60hz then set it at 60hz and try for that resolution of 1440x900, some refresh rates at higher levels dont allow many screen res's.

it's at 60 and still no dice. I've loaded several different video drivers, attached and disconnected a secondary monitor, just for kicks, i've even tried attaching the wide screen monitor while the secondary monitor is the primary, which oddly enough allows me to set the resolution to several settings that are so high the monitor cant support them, but not to the native resolution.

Was thinking on forcing the resolution but the Vista drivers from Nvidia dont seem to support that, well dont in the drivers I have.

    Are you using DVI connection?

But have you installed the monitor drivers from ACER as they are listed as Vista/XP http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/monitor/al1916.html ( dont know which W model yours is so you will have to check and choose )

yeah i'm using dvi, i'll try the drivers from acer. I looked for them earlier but could only find user manuals. i'm unsure as to which w model i've got as well... it has no additional letters. weirdly enough upon hooking the monitor to my room mates computer, which is using the same version of vista, i discovered that it his supported the native resolution. He's using an ATI card though, so im wondering if that is the source of my troubles.

well the monitor driver installed but it still appears to be limited to incorrect resolutions.

Reading the supporting docs for the Nvidia drivers that resolution is an unsupported one from them, where as it seems ATi use it, in latest Catalyst drivers, but will depend on card used.

This is what I was thinking on Advanced Timings but I dont see this in the Vista Detonator drivers I have installed http://www.nvidia.com/object/advanced_timings.html

well i can't find the advanced timings menu in the new control center, and it won't let me switch to the old menus. Though i did plug in 15" LCD as the secondary, and it for some reason offered 1440x900 as a selectable resolution, it didnt support it of course, but it was still there.

well, it's definitely a driver issue, i forced it to use some XP drivers and got the resolution i wanted, but there were major performance issues and i was limited to the vista basic theme, so my next question is this: Any body know how to edit drivers or is there an alternative driver set i can use?

Could send some feedback to Nvidia on this?

I have no suggestions for you I'm afraid, I looked into some tweaked drivers but didnt find any for Vista, but did stumble on this which is the issue your having, seems a mix between both the Monitor Maker and Nvidia sticking too close to the EDID specs ( maybe rightly so but that doesnt help you ) so have a read of this http://www.geocities.com/jgeneedid/ *warning* I have no idea on if editing the EDID will work or not so your on your own and the link is for research purpose only, upto you if you go ahead with this.

But Checkout Powerstrip http://www.majorgeeks.com/PowerStrip_d718.html as it may have options for changing or forcing a Res
