Restarting after installations, updates, etc.

At the risk of being laughed at, again, here's another of my silly questions. Only trying to learn!

Whenever I install, update or upgrade software on my computer I always do a restart even if the software doesn't tell me to restart. I think it's an old habit I've got into because at one time you nearly always were prompted to restart your computer after installing, updating, etc.

Am I just wasting my time doing a restart unless the software prompts me to do one?

My motto, better safe than sorry. I "waste" time rebooting. That way, if something doesn't work properly after installing, I can rule lack of rebooting as a cause.

Thanks for those replies. I'm glad I still do it.
