    HI,

I recently ran ComboFix.exe on my system and it has quarantined most of my user data and folders and renamed everything with the file extension '.vir'

Now that the system is secure and stable enough to install some security software that can potentially heal the files(Malwarebytes), is there a simple way to restore the file names and the the files to their original location on the computer?

Any help on this would be much appreciated, I was able to find one other post about this but it was specific to another forum member and had also been closed.

    Thanks.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

ComboFix is not a tool that you should ever be running on your own. It needs to be run only when suggested and exactly as suggested by an expert in malware removal. Why exactly did you run it to begin with? Who suggested to you that it should be run?

The problem you mentioned was a temporary issue with ComboFix several years ago that was long since fixed and has not occurred anymore since! Were you using a very old version of ComboFix in default scan mode or did you copy an paste in a specific fix into ComboFix that you found somewhere else that was not given to you by an expert?

Let's try to take a look around to see what ComboFix removed, please follow the below link/procedure to run MGtools and attach the resulting MGlogs.zip log. Shutdown protection software and Windows UAC before downloading/running to avoid having problems.

    Using MGtools

    Hi,

Many thanks for your quick response on this problem.

I have followed the instructions before running MGTools including disabling UAC and rebooting. MGTools ran smoothly and I have attached the MGlogs.zip log as requested.

The version of ComboFix.exe originally used was download from majorgeeks.com on 29.01.15 and I believe up to that date the newest version.
My original question here was because the older post with a similar problem that you mentioned made me wonder if it might be related, that was after some searching online. I have recovered the original downloaded ComboFix.exe file from Qoobox quarantine and copied it back to the desktop and deleted the .vir file extension and immediately stopped there because the older post mentioned that the fix was specific to that user and no-one else!

I will heed your advice about not using ComboFix.exe unless supervised in future.

    Thanks.

Try the below and let me know if it restore things for you.

Now we need to use ComboFix to DeQuarantine some files that it should not have removed.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named C:\DeQuarantine_log.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now attach the below log:
    • C:\DeQuarantine_log.txt
If ComboFix complains about your version being out of date, you will have to download a newer version first.

    Hi,

I have followed your instructions as you requested and the process seemed to run successfully. All the folders and files seem to have been restored however the files all still have the file extension '.vir'

I have zipped the DeQuarantine_log.txt(as it is a 10mb file uncompressed) and attached it as requested.

I am very grateful for your work and help is sorting out this problem for me.

    Thanks

    Hi,

I have gone ahead and used Bulk Rename Utility,
    http://www.bulkrenameutility.co.uk/Main_Intro.php
to remove the .vir file extension added by the original quarantine process and all is back in business on what is now also a clean laptop.

I would like to say thank you very much for all your help in fixing this for me and I am a very happy chappy!

I do not need any more of your help with this so please have a brew on me

    Thanks

You're welcome. Glad you got it all worked out.
Yes I was going to suggest using a utility like this since ComboFix had not stripped off the .vir extension on all files.
