Restore From Backup

I thought this would be easy, but I'm having trouble figuring out a way to do it. Recently I tried to setup a partition and it failed, rendering my OS unbootable. However, I used Knoppix's Boot from CD OS and that allowed me to access the HD and transfer the files to a backup disk. I then reformatted the HD, reinstalled Windows MCE 2005, and now have finished transferring the files back from the HD to a folder in my documents. So, now that I have all the backup files in a folder on the HD, how do I go about restoring the computer using those files? Would I have to use Knoppix again and rewrite all the files?

Also, after I'm done restoring, I would still like to partition the HD so that I can install Vista RC1 so if anyone here could give me a quick tutorial on how I would go about doing that without messing up the MBR, that'd be great.

 

The easiest way is to purchase some hard drive imaging software like Acronis TrueImage $50. You can then build images of your hard drive that can be used by the TrueImage boot CD to restore your system in case of hard drive failure.

When you rebuilt your machine, you should have built the other partition. No you will need a piece of software like Partition Magic to built that additional partition. May I ask why you find it necessary to build another partition?

 

Thanks I'll try that. And I'd like to build another partition so that I can test vista and play around with it. But, maybe it's not worth the effort and risk

 

Oh...forgot to mention, you'll need a place to store your images. I use an external USB hard drive.
