I've got a drive out of a PC that wouldn't boot. The drive itself is OK as I can read it when it's attached to another PC. The OS on this HD is Vista rolleyes, now the question is can I repair the MBR on this disk with the OS I am using (Win 7) so that it will recognize the Vista installation when it is returned to its original PC? :confused

The free edition of EasyBCD should enable you to fix it.

Testdisk will write a generic MBR to a HD. It has always worked to get a Windows installation to boot for me when the error is a blinking cursor at the top left. If you are sure it is the MBR then I would go ahead and try testdisk. Just be sure to select the correct HD. Then select MBR Code.

    Intel
    MBR Code
