    Hey guys

I have an Alienware M14X and a Belkin Wireless router.

Today i restored my laptop to factory settings as it had a couple of nasty trojans and now it no longer detects my wireless router at all.

After having searched online with my old laptop for a while i came to the conclusion that i think the wireless drivers need to be updated, so having realised this i dug out my ethernet cable and tried to connect my laptop to my router that way however the laptop still wont detect the router.

I even tried to use my iphone as a personal hotspot and get online via USB port but the laptop still didnt detect any networking hardware.

Im considering handing it into a shop to try and fix it but i dont really want to do this incase it still does nothing and i end up paying for it.

I would be really grateful for any help you guys could give.

    Cheers

I assume this problem is isolated to this laptop? Are any other device having problems?

Check the device manager to see what the driver status is for the wireless network adapter. Does it have a yellow or red icon? If you have a yellow icon you need to install or update the driver.

Check the status of your Ip address using ipconfig.
enter the following command from a command prompt "ipconfig /all" Your looking for the IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Default Gateway.

If you don't have an ip address or it starts with 169.x.x.x then there is a problem.

If DHCP Enabled is set to No make sure you set an ip address or configure your network adapter to Obtain an Ip address automatically.

If the network adapter was changed to Obtain an Ip address automatically (DHCP) then run the following command from the command prompt (may require elevated permissions).
    > ipconfig /renew

If you have viruses I suggest you visit our malware forum to have them removed before proceeding further. Factory settings might not have removed the viruses if you kept all your documents intact.

Yes the problem is isolated to this laptop, all my other devices can connect to wifi fine.

I know my drivers need to be updated as they all have yellow icons next to them in device manager. The problem is without the drivers i am unable to get on the internet to update them so i am stuck in a paradox.

messing about with the IP address and things does nothing because the laptop doesnt even see the router in the first place

Use your old laptop to locate and download the drivers, then transfer by CD or flash drive to new laptop and install.
